Advent+ Calendars?

I‘ve got our advent calendars for this year, one for our house and one for DS. I’m giving him the chocolate one that he can take to work. My coworkers used to vie for each door, so I thought DS might enjoy the same “power” at work: “no, you opened a door yesterday, it’s Chloe’s turn today.”

But, I’ve seen a lot of calendars with 25 days on them. What’s the big idea? The 25th isn’t Advent, it’s the first day of Christmas. And anyway, it’s a countdown calendar, once you get to the big day, why are you still counting? Get on with opening presents already!

Okay, pointless rant over. And get off my lawn. Lol.

The calendars I see don’t have dates, either. But I’m seeing calendars now that have 25 numbers instead of 24. What is 25 for? By day 25 of the countdown, you are ON Christmas, no need to count down any more.

We used to do Lego advent calendars, so fun. One year they were all sold out, so, holiday hoarder that I am, I pulled out one of our old ones, and rifled through the Lego bins for the bricks and pieces needed to make the little builds pictured on the box. We had so much fun that year seeing how well Mom did at gathering the right pieces so that the boys could open the doors and build anew.

Mine don't have "dates" they have numbers 1-24. Christmas eve would be the last day of advent.

Mine also just has numbers. Behind every door is a miniature ornament that I put on a small tree on my kitchen counter. BTW, Trader Joe’s has great chocolate advent calendars.

Love your idea and the pictures. I lost my sound, have to get new speaker. My younger son visited today, first his father then picked me up there and brought me home. He brought the tree from storage and set it up and we both went through about 20 old calenders which I had saved. That was fun, trying to remember from what year it was and from where. We always had to have two different ones for each one of the boys.

Cute idea! Will give the kids something to look forward to each day. I can see it becoming sort of a ritual to open one at the same time each day. Good way to get the kids doing things other than television too. ;o) Hmmm, wonder if I could do something like this with daily chores for my DH????? Oops! just thinking outloud here. LOL Luvs

My brother in law sends me a Jacquie Lawson online advent calendar every year. It’s so cute. There is a different activity for each day. Usually you build a scene, like a village. Here’s the description: Enjoy 25 days of seasonal fun in a pretty village in the Cotswold Hills in southern England. Depending on the year Advent starts before Dec 1st. Perhaps you could just start in Nov if the 25th day is a bother.

The First Sunday in Advent this year happens to be December 1. Our church has an Advent Event on the first Sunday, to make our own Advent wreaths to light each Sunday. But traditionally, the Advent calendars have 24 “days”. I just don’t know why I’m now seeing 25 “days” on the calendars this year. It’s not a bother (heck, if it means an extra chocolate sign me up! But, OTOH, 24 is evenly divisible by 2, 3, and 4, to accommodate however our family is assembled in any given year.)

On the topic of different Advent calendars...I saw that Sephora has one with little skin care/ makeup items.

Well, I solved my issue of my own creation. Stopped by my local indie bookstore and bought a 24-door calendar today. I‘ll save the other one for a year when the first Sunday in Advent is before December 1, and I can liturgically justify opening a door on November 30. Unless it’s chocolate. In that case, let’s add more doors!
