is hortico known to send mislabelled roses?
Comments (30)I order from pretty much every vendor out there, every spring, Hortico among them. They have only sent the wrong rose once, several years ago. They sent Belle Amour instead of Celeste (my namesake rose) and DH had ordered 5 of them for me as a gift. Now I have 5 Belle Amour's and only one Celeste...(not including myself...lol). But Pickering has also sent me the wrong rose....as have several other vendors. The Paul Ricault I ordered 3 years ago from Pickering turned out to be Gros Choux de Hollande so I wrote them a long letter w/ photos of it and they sent me another Paul Ricault the next spring. Turns out this one was ALSO Gros Choux de Hollande so I still don't have Paul. Mistakes happen, and I have quite a few roses that I didn't expect and even the most respected vendors have sent a wrong rose upon occasion. Nonetheless, I still take a chance and order from these same vendors every spring because I just can't stop collecting roses.... and here in zone 4 you can't find the roses I covet in any garden center locally. And sometimes the "mistake" roses turn out to be a delightful surprise. The roses I ordered this year from Hortico came right on time and are all blooming profusely....and are exactly who I ordered, so no complaints this year. Celeste...See MoreHortico Rose Order
Comments (6)I also seen all of the negative reports on Hortico, but it seems that many of the more recent postings have been positive. I therefore placed a small order with them for some very hard-to-find older Austins that I have grown before in another town: -English Garden (ordered it twice from Pickering and was sent what I believe to be either Charles Austin or Yellow Charles Austin-one plant threw a 9 foot cane: definitely NOT English Garden -Cressida: one of my favorite Austins -William Morris -Claire Rose: flowers last forever; will grow to 9 or 10 feet with flowers only at the tips of the canes, but responds well to pegging. I do hope that the plants they send are truly these varieties, as I understand that many were sent mislabeled roses in the past. The UPS put it out for delivery at 4 AM this morning, should arrive today!...See MoreHortico for roses
Comments (2)I live close to Hortico .. and in the past year or so they have changed over ownership. The whole place looks much better and is organized! I havent ordered from them as they are a short car ride away for me but my friend has purchased from them and her roses are doing wonderfully. She purchased several bareroot plants this spring. Comments (9)This is my 3 year old Burlesque. It is a lot taller than listed on Heirloom; mine is easily 7 feet tall; It does not mind hard pruning in the Spring to keep it shorter. My pictures are taken in full sun, so the color is more deep mauve; in the evening near dusk, its color can become dark purplish as shown on Heirloom. Fragrance: Burlesque has a deep and warm, very attractive fragrance. In the first year, my Burlesque produced blooms that are more dark pink and white stripes, which is totally different than the picture on Heirloom. You can see in the picture, that it has streaks of white. I was disappointed; but its fragrance is so attractive, so I wanted to wait for it to be more mature. The color of the blooms in the third year is a lot deeper and darker; at times it does look like the picture on Heirloom. I had always loved its fragrance; its beauty grows in me. Especially when the color 'dotted' to accentuate other ligher color (peach, or cream) around; it gives the depth of your garden when look from far. I strongly recommend Burlesque.
