Where to begin in master bathroom?

We recently bought a home that was built in 1990. The master bedroom and bathroom are huge but the bathroom is completely outdated.
Anyone want to weigh I with what YOU would do? As you can see there is no door.
Also, the shower is a capsule with barely enough room for one person, but the bathtub is ready for a party lol..
Here’s the listing photos.
We want to pull the bathtub and make a large shower. There’s almost too much room here!
And the vanity needs to go as well.

Thoughts?

How can we do a nice tiled bathroom without going over the top on $$$$? Buy what's available in stock at Lowes or Home Depot. They have a lot of nice choices in tiles, with coordinating sets so you can have one size for the shower floor, another for the shower walls, another for the bathroom floor, plus accent pieces and edge pieces. I've read tile floors leak and we should do cultured marble for the base of the shower - where do we find that? That's not true at all. First of all, the shower will need to be waterproofed. Here in California, they do tar. You would call for that service. After the tar is set, there is a water test that gets done to make sure it is watertight. (This is done by an inspector if you are doing this with permits.) I like using smaller tile on the floor of the shower - smaller is better for a slip-proof floor. If you are DIYing most of this and pulling permits, get a copy of the local codes from your town. That will help you in how to design the shower properly, with curbs etc.

Remember tile is permanent so you would be wise to select something which will not go out of style or be difficult to design around. Earth tones will always be good. That said, I cannot imagine selecting floors independent of the walls. Size of tile is somewhat dependent upon the space. 12" works almost everywhere. Smaller tiles with more grout lines make for better foot security - especially if you will be using polished stone. Personally I believe glass tile is trendy though they look nice. Glass is more costly to install. Make a drawing of your space - floors and walls, then visit a quality tile shop. Look at their displays and purchase a few tiles to take home (they're returnable), then speak with one of the deisgners. Generally a free service when purchasing. They will assist with borders or accent inserts to liven the space. You might combine stone with ceramic or go all the same. Once you've selected the tile, move on to paint. My 2 cents. Good luck.

I much prefer the closet off the bath and easy access from the closet to the laundry. Ours is a walk though closet approx 15' x 7' 6". Doors opposite each other giving DH a space of a bit more than 5' x 7'6" and I have about 7' x 7' 6" on my end, so basically two decent sized, but not overly large walk in closets sharing a 3' walk through between the bath and my office (but steps from laundry). DH slept in this morning. I showered and got ready for the day, put up laundry, and dried a load of towels and put them up all without disturbing DH. During the day, I most frequently access the closet and master bath from my office. Very convenient.

You have a few options to look at to make this happen. Besides for getting a master bathroom, what else do you need in the house? Do you need 2 living rooms? Do you need 3 bedrooms? How large of a master bathroom do you want? It's easiest to install a bathrooms side by side, but not necessary. You just need to run plumbing lines to that location. Without seeing the full house, here is what I would suggest: Turn the downstairs living room / bathroom into a master suite. You have plumbing downstairs already, and what sounds like a large space. You may be able to fit a good size bedroom (15'x13'), bathroom with 3, 4 or 5 fixtures, and a full walk in closet. That would leave your full upstairs as it is, and give you the privacy for a master on its own floor level. You can look at turning bedroom 1 into a master bathroom. This would keep the master bedroom where it is, and give you a good size bathroom or a bathroom / closet combo. You can always add a small bedroom downstairs if you want to keep the bedroom count. If you want to look at using your deck as an addition, I would suggest having the bedroom where the deck is, and converting bed 2 into a bathroom and master hallway to the bedroom. You can open up the living room on the patio side with a nice big door for an indoor - outdoor feel, and build a new deck there. I would be careful to examine if you are blocking light into the downstairs living room, and if there are local code requirements for this. Hope this helps and gives you some ideas! Need a door if you have a toilet. Do you need such a large vanity? Could add more storage. I wonder if you could put the vanity where the tub is, with a toilet, then close off that area

I'd like to see all four walls of the bathroom, and from bedroom looking into bathroom area. Approx. measurements would also help.

I would definitely gut and start over. Can plumbing be moved easily (are you on slab, basement, crawlspace)?

I would also add a door. Is that a clothes closet in the bathroom, with linen closet across from it?

Does the toilet face inward or parallel to the wall?

We did a huge self GC remodel last year, including two total bathroom guts. One we moved shower across the room. The other we swapped master closet with bathroom.

Ugh no door? what are people thinking? I'd be looking at the entire space and probably getting a normal to nice sized bathroom and adding closet space.

Rough plan with measurements would help with suggestions. More photos as well

I'm afraid that not having a door to the toilet in an open en-suite, and shower being too small to use(is it too small, or just not too big? some showers are indeed can be so small it gets tricky, I sprained my back once in some hotel)) would leave me with considering gutting and reconfiging the space

(Finishes etc don't bother me..to me, is pure functionality issue.)

Then there's question of budget of course.

Luckily it's a big space, one has what to play with.

If you did not get detailed existing drawings with the sale and want to brainstorm about the space for a while yourself, I would go find the permit drawings filed with whatever permit office (they are in storage somewhere) and get copies for a few $$$. It‘s much easier to begin to tackle this with scale drawings & a bird’s eye view of the entire area inside & out. The permit drawings may not be 100% accurate - things change during construction - but usually a good start and easy to double check the as-built dimensions. I would not gut the bathroom yet. Lots of houses from the late 80s-90s had huge whirlpool tub with decks and steps and small showers, it’s a good thing because it gives lots of square footage to redesign without needing to “borrow” space from other rooms.

Plan carefully with the aid of a good designer. Master baths are even more expensive per square foot to remodel than a kitchen. They’re smaller than a kitchen, but cost about the same.

So, the toilet is on the end, looking at the bed? That’s weird, even by 80’s-90’s style. From the windows, it looks like a second floor bathroom, and if so, you can pretty easily (within limits) move plumbing. Definitely agree a total gut...perhaps add an enclosed closet taking up a decent portion of the current footprint at the bedroom end. The windows make the shower location a bit more tricky.

We need to see a floorplan. This is a total re-do, IMO. No door from the bedroom to the bath AND no door on the toilet? Insane.
