White Subway Tile tub/shower remodel
Comments (45)Hi! The big window in the shower is part of my 1985 tract house and appears to be a problem for most homeowners in my neighborhood. The original installation was prone to leaks, with water penetrating the inside of the wall. Many neighbors use a shower curtain along that wall, but I wanted to have an unadorned window. We gutted the room, and hired a local "vinyl" window company to install the picture window. It's dual pane with patterned (Industrex) glass. The interior of the window was not rated to be used in a wet environment. The installer caulked areas he thought would be vulnerable. There is no way to know if water is going inside the window, but to my eye I think it's doing great. My tile installer used "old school" techniques, putting wire lath up with layers of mortar which he leveled perfectly. The tile is perfectly square and sits flush against the window. Along the bottom edge, he used sheets of vichithane (sp?) which is a sticky rubber product. He over-did that area to make sure water never entered the wall. The marble sill sits on top of the waterproofing system. A window in the shower is great and I love the design, however, I can't shower at night with the light on. I have no problems with a "peep show" as long as I shower in the morning with the light coming in from the outside. Hope that helps! P.S. The local window company convinced us they manufacture windows, but I suspect they are the same as big-box store retrofit vinyl windows. The rest of the house we used Renewal by Andersen and they're much better....See MoreCrackle Subway Tile in Shower
Comments (11)If you are still thinking about going ahead with this tile, you should ask Adex if they're willing to stand behind their product if there's a problem. When we bought our WZ Mizu crackle tile and the sales person told us that we couldn't use it for wet applications, I was curious as to why their brochure pictured the same tile in use in a bath/shower application. The sales person said that they had been unaware of any issues until a few customers had "ugly problems," and that they ended up reimbursing the customers for retiling their showers. Though she said that she would be less concerned since we were only planning to use the tile in the shower as an accent, since WZ would not back the product for that use we limited the use of the tile to dry areas. Will Adex retile your shower if there's a problem down the road? Even if they will, do you want to go through the hassle? Why risk it when there are so many nice tiles out there....See MoreSubways on shower, 6x6 on wall???
Comments (10)Thanks everyone!!! I still don't know what the heck to do. I did, however, go ahead and order my listello pieces. And damn it, the tigers eye glass pieces are nothing like the color in my sample. I was beyond irritated but I don't have the strength to start over. Guess I'll learn to love it. Wish I could post a pic or drawing of my bathroom, but I am clueless. I'll try to explain. When you walk through the door from the living area into the bath, on your left is the alcove that will have my shower...no tub, just shower. It is 5'5" long. On your right side will be the vanity and toilet. Then you walk on through another door that goes into a bedroom. So, the shower is on one side, vanity and toilet on the other and these two doors line up with each other on each end. I wanted to put subways on the shower and 6X6 on the wall behind vanity/toilet. OR, I could reverse that, I guess. What to do....what to do. I wish someone had a pic of what I'm thinking of doing. Toadangel, your pics gave me a little idea, but you have a tub with your subways, and your 4x4's are on a shower wall. Thank you so much for them, though. What a nice job! Maybe I'll post this on the decorating forum and see what ideas or pictures I might get over there. Thank you all soooooo much for your thoughts pup...See MoreAdvice on countertop and floors if marble subway in shower...
Comments (2)I am just embarking on a remodel, so do not have the same experience as many here, but we are considering marble subway tiles with dark gray slate floors that are textured (eg, not too slippery). We are shying away from marble vanity top, because we want the low maintenance/antibacterial advantage of quartz, even though its less "oooh". Our fabricator will do 2 bathroom vanities (36 and 60") in white quartz for about 1200 total (at the same time as the kitchen granite, which is costing a bit more!)....See Morekudzu9
