Same here, have to eliminate most likely the pomelo and grapefruit. I hope the Shiranui will be no 1 , have 3 or 4 tree’s of them. No 2 ??, no3 ??

My trees take up to much room and get kicked outside in ground and under glass in the winter. I will be giving some of my trees away next year.

I agree with you Bob about the pomelo and grapefruit. They’re my least favorite fruit, but the trees are so pretty and the flowers are incredibly fragrant...tough decisions!

Should be an easy choice, Laura. You can always add and subtract later. You are good in grafting and do thing better later on.

I also will evaluate my citrus collection next year, and see which ones I want to continue with. I've given away a lot this year, like most of the lemons and kumquats. Also, I'm hoping to get some land next year for the purpose of growing vegetables, herbs and fruit trees.

I wish I had a bigger yard with more light. I love the big trees, but I like full sun for my plants and flowers.

I just ditched my last meyer lemon, never again - I have a sunquat but I'd try a regular lemon no more meyers thank you, and I made room for one. The one tree thats always not happy compared to the rest. Just Repotted a tough Miho Wase that refused to come out of 2 gallon pot into bigger 3 gallon digs, caught me of guard (didn't expect it had outgrown pot in one year)until it started dropping leaves. Was choking itself.

Well, I've lately gotten into mangoes, so I've got to eliminate a few of the non-perfection citrus. It's gonna be difficult.

Dave, mango’s? I am have a multi grafted one started, i’ll try it one more year, I’ ll give it better care this coming season than.......try something else.

I’m seriously debating ripping out my original Key Lime tree. It’s a massive thorny tree that produces more fruit than I can eat, give away, rake up or handle. It would make room for 2 more trees in its place that are more desirable varieties and thornless. Still debating it though so I’m not sure. It’s hard to tell but this tree is starting to swallow up my Oro Blanco, gold nugget mandarin and tango mandarin trees in its thorny canopy.

I tasted one again that is going up for adoption. Vaniglia blood orange...cool looking, juicy, but I prefer a little acid.

It’s getting close to decision making after I get to taste a variety of them. I know young trees don’t produce the best tasting fruits yet, just getting an idea might be good enough.

I gave my daughter my oroblanco tree which had around 40 fruit on it in a 1/2 wine barrel container. I’m just not a big grapefruit fan even though the oroblanco is the best tasting imho. I don’t have anymore room to add more trees as there is no space. So I must remain content with what I have or else learn how to graft if I want other varieties.

My husband gave me an ultimatum, so I’m going to be rehoming half of my lemon trees and probably a Buddha’s hand. I haven’t tasted fruit from any of them yet, so it’s going to be tough picking the ones that have to go :’(

Your husband doesn’t have a say so, he better check with us first. How long has his truck been in the garage doing nothing. Your trees going back out in a couple of months. Not fair.

My citrus plans are minimal to non-existent for next year, all my citrus is in ground. Currently have 7 varieties of Satsuma (Owari, Miho, Armstrong, Louisiana Early, St Ann and 2 unknowns) growing, 2 of which are on trees that are getting close to 20 feet wide and over 10-12 feet tall, most of the rest have been planted in the last 3-4 years. In addition to the Satsumas, are a Meyers lemon, a Cara Cara Orange and a sweet Kumquat. I have room for maybe 2 more citrus trees, so I want to choose wisely, options are limited here as I live in an ACP / HLB quarantine state (Louisiana), which generally limits my selection to the offerings of 2 citrus nurseries. (Saxon Becnel, and Star Citrus).

Becnel is now starting to offering Seto Satsuma, so I may try to snag one of those (availability is limited), I am also considering an AmberSweet orange to have a juicing orange, that may perhaps be a bit more cold hardy than most juicing oranges.

Ike, have you tried the Pineapple orange yet, juicing one, popular in the texas area’s.

As soon the weather breaks around the second part of April will move work benches out, reposition the lights for next season. Was going to do that this past summer, this will give me much better space. Will still eliminate some trees.

One 10’ long the other 16’, all free for the taking. Lots of tools.

I am still missing three varieties to complete my citrus collection:

- valentine pummelo

- one of the gold mandarins

- daisy mandarin.

I have a few unknown varieties that I can let go but I want to taste the fruits once just by curiosity and to figure out what variety they are.

Next year, I will have fun to repot some of my plants from 5 gallons to 3 gallons. I overpotted them last year because 5 gallons containers were all I had at that moment.

I will also need to paint my rootmaker container in white before summer (Black absorbs too much heat and my trees stopped growing).

I will slowly switch my citrus collection to a sub tropical collection. You know jaboticaba, avocado, guava, starfruit, stuff like that.

Amy, you have to be careful with tropicals, to know how big the root ball gets in a hurry, some favor big pots. As far as containers, where I live, AR, black containers don’t bother me, why?, my growing season is relatively short for citrus, warm pots are actually of benefits to me. I don’t know if you saw my setup, I grow lemongrass to cover pots from direct sun exposure.. this stuff grows pretty quick.

It was a real surprise how agreeable the Valentine and Thong Dee pomelo tasted, milder than a grapefruit. Will let you know about the Gold series, getting close to ripe.

Amy Ma y ask why the change. Perhaps you know a lot of good knowledge that I lack. Figs are the only other subtropical that I grow and they only produced well when our heat came in April instead of mid/late May. I am going to let all my in ground fig trees die over winter and stick with potted figs that I can kick start in late march to put out in mid/late April. My largest seed grown Meiwa kumquat is going outside in ground next spring.

Steve, I’ve always loved the taste of exotic fruits but lack the knowledge to grow them. I learned a lot from members here so I think that I am good to give it another try. Actually, my new endeavour starts when I saw Bob’s, Matt’s and Brian’s pictures. They all give me hope that it can be done here in Canada. I don’t need to have a huge harvest. In fact, I will be satisfied with a couple of fruits from my trees since that’s actually what I can afford when I bought them from the grocery.

Here is what exotic fruits cost here:

Longan and lichies: 4.99$/lbs and if we are lucky we can get them for 3.99$ sometime of the year

Sugar apple and wax jambu: 5.99$/lbs and sometime 6.99$/lbs. Never saw them cheaper than that

Jaboticaba: bought them once for 3.99/lbs and never saw them again

Mango: saw thai mango from time to time but they are 5.99$/lbs

Oh and I also prefer to grow my own fruits and vegetables these days. At least I know what I applied on them.

Bob, I used to do the same than you but now that I have my greenhouse I only have a narrow path to put my plants and it’s a big no no to put anything on the lawn (my husband loves his lawn dearly).

It’s quality now instead quantity.!!! Have quantity and plenty of, it will be plenty interesting this coming season.

It has been a learning process for sure for this mango tree, hopefully it will be different this coming season.

My atemoya will get maybe 3 new graft, this tree will get more attention, getting better this coming season too.

Planning to do the same thing, reducing the number of the trees I grow. Don't have a large collection of citrus, but had fun growing other tropical fruiting or seedling trees, already have given friends and neighbors 2 soursops, 1 wax apple, 1 coffee tree, 2 figs and 2 guavas, all of them 3 years old beautiful trees. Spread the joy, guys :))

My plans for next year involve not dealing with brown soft scale. After fighting with them for 5 years, I've finally had enough. Numerous neemings work, but a couple always survive.

I've applied two doses of imidacloprid and a dose of dinotefuran to all my citrus. My main concern is the bee population, so if I can nail them indoors, then so "bee" it. It should wear off come five months from now.

Hey Eve, Don't rip out the key lime. After all how many limes do you need. My dad just did that with an old kumquat before I could stop him. Just remove about 80% of the growth and keep it really low or out of the way and leave maybe one leader and keep that trimmed back. That way you can still plant your other two citrus trees and maybe get 20 limes a year.

I left a ton of Spanish needle and it helped the bee population a TON. I plan on adding a Meyer Lemon and Duncan Grapefruit to my crazy mix. So I can have a backup lemon. I also just started using rotting logs to edge the citrus from grass and plan on adding some chicken manure, citrus fert for micro, and a thin layer of pine bark mulch to help a couple trees take off. Citrus greening ASP made it up this way this past year so I am going to have to keep a lookout. Would recommend really spreading your citrus out or putting breaks in between rows. leafminers have always been a problem for me on certain trees so may work on those a little more as well. I am currently doing trials and added low chill sweet cherries to the mix this year :) Also to the above, I don't think Meyer Lemons do well at ALL in containers. The fruit is too heavy and they really don't produce well until about 8 foot with 3" calipers to hold said weight of fruit either bush or tree form "I prefer bush and wear SAFETY glasses while picking".
