Invitation to the greenhouse warming party!
Comments (8)Karyn...hi, we certainly hope this one doesn't get blown away this time..mind you the last one wasn't expected to either! No, there is no access to the g'h from the garage as this would take up valuable plant space I thought...plus I'd rather look at plants than a door...haha. Lauri, thanks for the email, will have a go at that coffee recipe, yummy! The greenhouse bascically faces south-east, I guess. It gets sun all day except for the last bit in the evening as the sun then disappears to the right of the fir tree you can see in our neighbours garden. The temps inside it have been hovering around 75-80F on sunny days, but we have chilly nights at present and I have some bedding plant seeds sown so the fan heater is on during the night to keep it above 40F. Today, I left the door shut while I went to work, the sun was particularly strong for the time of year and it topped out at 104F!! We have had to ensure plenty of ventilation so have spaces all along the roof line left open both at the front edge and back, but at the moment they are filled with foam rubber else the heat from the fan heater just escapes. Shade cloth is also a necessity even in our climate in the UK!. The garage wall seems to be acting like a giant storage heater as you can feel it's warmth even when the sun has gone. Will keep you posted on it's progress. Regards, Gill....See MoreSuggestions on how to make a white kitchen warm and inviting?
Comments (24)Coffeeaddict - I second marcydc's suggestion to talk to someone who installs would that comes highly recommended. We had the wall removed between our kitchen and dining room and had natural maple wood floors installed in the kitchen to match the rest of the 100 year old floor and several people have given unsolicited comments that they can't see where the old floors end and the new floors begin. Keep in mind that if you look closely (i.e. as the owner) there are differences. Some of the old boards have a slight gaps between them where the new boards are snug and seamless. The old boards are long, each board extending the length of the room, the old are normal random pieces from 2 - 6 feet. We did have the entire 1st floor refinished at once - but I don't even thing that is necessary (but makes it easier.) We had to patch and even weaved in new boards and it looks great. I would also second the idea of some wood counter - maybe the island (if you have one) peninsula, or the edge of a counter as butcher block. I also love walnut counters or cherry counters. You can even search in the forum for the discussions of those who like having wood around the sink. Wall paint can help as well. Even if you have cooler colors you can be surprised with a shade of yellow that is a little green or a little whatever that works with your pallet. Or a warm beige/gray. We have a color called pismo dunes (it is a BM AC color) that is sometimes brown, slightly gray but warm and elegant and looks great with the white trim in our room....See MoreHow to make an awkward exterior more inviting on a tight budget?
Comments (7)I think it is a cute little house but you need to play to its strengths. The corner windows are a strong mid century design detail which someone tried to colonialize with shutters. Pull off the shutters, replace the front door when you can with a retro style door with a great strong color (turquoise, orange, purple). I would also paint the siding in the whole area by the front door wrapping around under the corner window white (I would love to replace just that siding with board and batten or V groove but paint is cheaper) Otherwise you just need to invest in landscaping- not a row of bushes pressed up against the house......See MoreIdeas to make entryway more inviting
Comments (10)@Jessica O Thanks for definition of ”Battleax” house lot. In my neck of the woods those are called ”Flag” lots lots - the driveway being the pole & the lot the house sits on is the flag. Another question - I see a break in the screen at far end of carport - is there a door through there? What does a person see once they walk through gate - a real door into house? How about a large ”welcome” sign on gate & a light over gate - much like a porch entry light. As was suggested, put a welcome mat there too. Dress it up to look like a front door - hang a wreath on the gate....See MoreLiya
