Is there any hope for me and a climber?
Comments (40)Constance Spry. Yes, it's a once bloomer but when it blooms the display lasts for a month. I have 'her' at the S.E. corner of my house next to & over an arbor. It took about 3 to 4 years but now she's a big girl. Easily 10-12 ft tall and 8-9 ft wide - almost unheard of in Michigan. Very little damage from our dry cold winters. Very disease & drought resistant. And doesn't require much in the way of food or coddling. In fact, I think she thrives on benign neglect. I never spray for BS or other diseases and will only rarely spray insecticide in the spring to keep the sawfly larvae under control. It's a tough-love program in my garden and fussy roses just don't make it. Like most of my other own-root Austin roses, it took a few years to get established but is well worth the wait....See MorePillar-style Roses for a Long Pergola
Comments (12)catsrose, that's such a cool idea! This structure isn't really a pergola, in the sense that there's two rows of posts, parallel to one another, with connecting beams above. It's more of an arcade ... but when I tell people that I'm building an arcade, they picture video games. :) As I sit here with my calculator, though, I find that it's not possible to use this formula for this structure. I changed the design so the posts are now going to be 6' apart (to add more roses, of course). If I calculated things correctly, the posts would only be 3.7' high. (?) I'm going with a different sort of historic model ... vertical emphasis, with big corner braces that make the openings between the posts resemble Gothic arches. Comments (31)Repeat blooming would definitelt be a plus. I don't know what it is but with my short season I really want them to bloom more than once. Greedy I guess, lol! Quick Silver looks really pretty, Moses. I hadn't though of a lavender but against the white post it would be lovely. Lady Ashe might be too stiff. Since I need it to go up all the blooms would be at the top above where I could enjoy them but I like the color. I don't know . My mind is boggled. Good thing I have time to decide since I'd have to order for next spring now anyways. Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions!...See MoreBest climbers with nodding heads
Comments (25)Vap, Viking Queen is on the fence and this area has benches for sitting. I’m ok with “regular“ thorns there I just don’t want the crazy fierce ones. That LaFrance is amazing. Where did you get it from? ac, my Viking Queen is young but already I would think she’d be too big for that size of an obelisk. At this point her canes are pretty supple and bendy but she seems like she’s gonna grow into a...well, Viking Queen! Wedgewood sounds appealing! dave, I really only have room for one white and one pink but I’ve gotten some really good suggestions here and now I think I’m gonna try two white-Claire and generous gardener and for pink jasmina and if I can find it cl la France Lots of other great suggestions which just might have to go on the fence! Thanks everyone!...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
