Washer and Dryer for 2nd floor : help wanted - confused
Comments (11)I've had a Samsung front loader (and dryer) for 2-3 years now. I love them. I have split level house and they are installed in the bathroom in the upper level. Also the bathroom and 3 bedroom are all at the end of the hallway so there is no more than 10 feet from the washer to any of the bedroom doors. The machines is quiet. I have no hesitations about running it when someone is sleeping. It's actually quieter than my old top loader (which isn't really saying much because that was so loud you could hear it through the whole house). If I'm at the other end of the house someone has to walk to the bathroom to tell if a load is done (because I don't usually have the signal on). I also love the vibration reduction part. My MIL and sister both talk about not placing stuff on their front loaders because it will get bounced off as well as the frequent walks the machine takes. I put things on mine all the time and nothing gets bounced off. Also the machine doesn't walk at all. I recently had to move the washer to get something that get pushed off the back by the kids. The machine had sat in one place so long it was "stuck" to the floor. I love the Samsung, I would replace it in a heartbeat with another Samsung if this one broke....See MorePedestal use for washer/dryer on 2nd floor
Comments (5)We got the pedestals for our FL. Floor is not on concrete; it is on a regular wood joist floor over the garage. The FL doesn't vibrate much, except when I have a large load and the weight distribution isn't perfect on the final spin. After a minute it "planes out" when it reaches max spin speed, and vibration ceases. The washer sits next to an outside wall. The foundation is the downstairs garage wall, and laundry room floor joist sits on the foundation. The appliance store sales guy told me if I jump up and down on the floor and felt a 'trampoline' effect, we would vibration problems. Because our washer sits next to an outside wall and the foundation goes right up to the laundry room floor, it's not much of a problem. If your laundry area is over a load-bearing wall, you might not have much trouble. Newer home construction seems to have wall and floor joists farther apart (cheaper to build). I can't help but wonder if some of the FL vibration issues are because of that. Our son and his wife are renting a condo that has a FL washer/dryer and no pedestals, on the first floor, outside wall right behind them. Very similar to my situation. I'm not sure what is under the floor (joists or concrete), but one night we were over there when a very large (gallon) jug of liquid detergent was vibrated right off the top of their washer, hit the floor and leaked all over the flooring. No pedestal. It is probably impossible to predict without knowing how the home was constructed, space between floor joists, etc. Perhaps your appliance dealer is willing to take the pedestals back if the vibration is too much?...See MoreQUIET stackable washer/dryer for 2nd floor?
Comments (9)The biggest problem you may or may not have is the construction of your home. There is always going to be some vibration from a stacked set, much less a regular side by side. If everything is very solid, you are probably ok but if the structure is at all bouncy it will translate into the walls and be loud. There are any number of things you can do, and there are any number of options for washers but the structure will be the limiting factor....See MoreBest FL washer/dryer for 2nd floor laundry room
Comments (3)I am also curious about this. CR recently reviewed antivibration pads and a new anti-vibration unit that the whole washer sits on. We currently have a top loader on second floor on shake-away pads, and it still shakes the floor more than we would like. CR's most recent tests rate so many washers as excellent on vibration that it is not helpful. Has anyone found real vibration tests for recent (new) models?? The pad that CR likes is only for front-loaders, so we are looking at the following, either: 1. THe best (least vibration) front loader and the anti-shake pad (steadywash I think), or, 2. The least vibration top loader (don't care if it's top or front as we hang all of our clothes, but our current top loader uses way too much water, as evidenced by our water bill increase after we got it - so would prefer something that uses less water) CR mentioned Samsung WF520AB[P] when they tested the pads. Thoughts? Thanks!!!...See MoreEphma
