Moving kitchen location..form or function?
Comments (5)Are you saying to basically flip the family room and kitchen locations? I think that could definitely work with some fiddling. You could then flip your pantry and stairs. Then that could give you a window in the stairwell as suggested by pps7, and put the pantry near the kitchen. You also may have room to put the powder room w/in mudroom area and possibly tweak the laundry space so that you could have a seating area for kitchen. You may want to consider flipping the dining/office areas as well. We spend most of our time in the kitchen, so I'd prefer that. Also, that gives you a direct walkway from kitchen to the grill...so you aren't passing through the family room with a plate of burgers or whatever!...See Morekitchen design..Am I giving up looks for function?
Comments (21)Would you consider the refrigerator on the end, the DO next, a bit of counter, followed by the induction, more counter to the return. Yes, to moving the prep sink more toward the main sink end, but not at the end as it would be a problem for anyone using the main sink. When do you use your trash? I use mine before loading the dishwasher and rarely use the disposal. With recycling, there's not a lot of trash generated and if you compost it really is minimal. It seems the best spot might be at the end of the island, left of the prep sink for easy access from the stove, DW and prep area -- assuming that will be the island as you don't have other uninterrupted counter. Would you like a display cabinet on the DR wall, either by itself or in combination with a tall pantry and maybe a separate narrow cabinet for broom, folding step stool etc? If you like the pantry idea, there's the more shallow kind or you an consider the Hafele folding pantry which is wonderful....See MoreIs this kitchen with no backsplash functional? (see picture)
Comments (26)I'd happily attempt to cook in this kitchen. Yet somehow I imagine my family finding me at the counter with a knife in my hand, poised mid-chop, staring out the window at some far more interesting bird. Or at the range, vacantly stirring a sauté pan of burning onions as I admire the sunset. Cut fingers and charred food aside, I'd learn to live with it if you made me... Seriously though, I do wonder how it looks at night. That's a lot of black to look at when the view goes away....See MoreWhich floor plan do you prefer for a more functional kitchen ?
Comments (57)Now that I zoom in the window, I see what you mean. Hard to tell since the plan shows a box, pic looks flat, and there's no interior shot. How to deal with it? Maybe leave that window as it is; The former front door could be a round or octagonal window, which would suit the house, and not put the stair hall on display lol! What I ment by recessed front door is, that part is stepped back from the front build line. Your "photoshop" looked like it was all even across the front on my screen, maybe it's must my screen (or eyes). Either way, I think it's a great idea :) I like some protection for a front door, and I suspect that the front door as originally built is right at the permitted build line, and adding an overhang wouldn't be allowed. So where you suggest it allows for an overhang of some kind, even if it's just a pergola....See MoreLynnNM
