had any sucess with 40w fluorescent bulbs?
Comments (10)Mike, since both fluorescent bulbs and tubes loose their intensity rapidly as you move even a few inches away from them, it is very difficult to grow tall plants under them efficienty since the lower leaves are in a very low light situation. Plants growing underlights should be able to have most of their greenery up close to the bulb or tube. I don't grow anything under the tubes which is more than about 8" tall for that reason. Wattage means less than footcandles when placing your plants, so use a light meter to measure the footcandles where the leaves of the plants are. I used to use a grow tube and a bright white in each fixture. I finally switched over to bright white only and the orchids seem to do just as well. I also keep a couple angled old door mirrors horizontally behind the shelves hoping to reflect back some of the light onto the plants. As for whether they've helped or not, I don't know; I had them so figured I'd use them rather than toss them in the trash....See MoreDoes anyone know what happens to steneotarsonemus at 5C or 0C?
Comments (2)I considered trying the hot air method with the oven (I got an oven thermometer) but was scared... Then I realized I could leave the bulbs on a heater which goes up to 50C on the surface and I did leave them there turning every few hours. The bulbs got a little scar on one side but this is all. (I visited an organic gardenshop and "rescued" 3 rotten bulbs which were being sold at 0,5 euro each; now I have 4 bulbs and I wonder wether it was the right thing to do since I have no experience at saving a bulb from rot) Poor them have flower scapes. They are all hard but rather small (1-1,5 inch diameters) The heat treatment didn't seem to bother them much at all. Should I cut the flower scapes or should I let them bloom and go to seed to save them through seed...? Foliar feeding would be allright (kelp based feed)? Or should I refrain from any feeding? I dusted them with rooting hormone and put each on top of hydroton balls with 0,5 inch between the base of the bulb and the water which is 2 inches deep. Pots - transparent water bottles. I made the mistake of covering the hydroton and the top of the bulbs with clear plastic film because the top hydroton layer was dry....See MoreDoes anyone put heat lamps into bathrooms anymore?
Comments (59)Sure, Build.com and other sites sell them. Found one in about two minutes. Here But they are not going to work for a sloped ceiling. No one probably makes one that swivels like you would need for that application. Heat in a radiant form, as in a light bulb heater, travels in a straight line and you will be heating whatever surface the ceiling pitch has the bulb pointing at. You need to build out a triangular box to put the fixture in. You can drywall it so that it is not as obvious as mine was. It is not a great picture, but in the upper left side of the photo you can see the maple triangular box that gives my light fixture a level surface to hang on....See MoreDoes anyone know what these are?
Comments (10)Another vote for Ranunculus- Although they dont last long in hot weather, they're still a pretty good bang for your buck kind of bulb. And easy to plant- they only need to go 5 cm down or so, so I just jab a thumb down- no digging necessary. You can usually get about 25 corms for 7 dollars or so and they often sell them in lots of single colours, or mixes like -"romantic mix"- pinks whites and burgundy, or "citrus/sunset mix"- all oranges yellows and reds. Anyways, I tend to plant some fresh every year- the return/comeback next year is pretty good, but It would be a sad spring without them....See MoreMeyermike(Zone 6a Ma.)
