At what point are you a Cancer Survivor?
Comments (23)Aw, man. I can't tell you how much I appreciate and will benefit from, your prayers and good thoughts. Thank you so much. I've signed up for the 'walk' portion of our local Race for the Cure, it's the first of August this year and I'm assuming that by then I'll be able to participate. I'm not a runner at all, my knees won't take it. My surgery is May 1. I've never had a surgery before, not even a C-section, so am naturally scared of what's coming. There's one part of me that says maybe, not knowing, is a blessing, so I can't dwell on anything specific. My mother had a radical mastectomy about 30 years ago, and then 15 years later had colon cancer. She didn't recover from that. So Monday I'm having the dreaded colonoscopy that has scared me for so long. I want to know, without a doubt, that there's nothing else going on....See MoreColonoscopy - The Most Dreaded Medical Procedure!!..
Comments (12)omg about choked when I saw this...unlike dave I waited till crisis mode, before rushing to the local hospital er at 3am!...my colon had finally rebelled and was scaring me to pieces! after being admitted, I was treated to a wonderful team of nurses but still was facing the dreaded decision... doc didn't give me a choice...as I hadn't had to eat since my dinner the night before, they made an apt for 7am the next day! about 2-3 pm I was given golightly product although unlike dave, mine was like being drowning in the ocean it was soooo salty tasting...the nurses gave me cups of crushed ice as if this would numb my taste buds, lol.. bright and early at 6 am was rolled down to the prep area...(out patient care) after hooking me up to yet another bag of saline, monitors, ect, was taken to the next room...after putting on oxygen, noticed the clock going around in circles, lol....that was the last thing I remember...they made necessary repairs, and finally was sent back up to my room...all I can say is just don't wait as long as I did.......See MoreLynn's colonoscopy journal. Comments (12)I volunteer in the GI Lab and this is hilarious. I have learned a few things that might be of help to you future colonoscopy recipients: 1. choose a doc that does NOT use the Colyte. 2. make your appointment for early morning. Trust me on this one. Maybe before 9:00 AM. You'll thank me later. 3. Stop eating 1 1/2 days before procedure instead of just 1 day before. Trust me on this one, too. 4. If you have any concerns or real problems, tell the doc or nurse BEFORE you go into procedure, b/c when it's over, you won't remember to ask him a thing, unless it's like "when can I eat and go home?" Trust me on this one, too. I had 1 2 weeks ago and I don't remember who put my clothes on me afterwards, or how I got down to the car, or the doc coming in for the consultation afterwards. When you volunteer in a GI Lab, there are lots of ANGRY people b/c they're hungry, and they're always running late. Hence, the early morning appointment. Just trust me on all this!!LOL If you DO have one scheduled, I'd be happy to tell you the prep my doc uses which does not include Colyte, and it's not Rx. But, next time the Vodka may be included in my prep!! LOL...See MoreSpeaking of a sleep study...
Comments (11)Okay, here's my story, just a little different.... Same up to the "they took me to bed" basically. I got there around 9. Here they do a, I think it's called a split night study. If after 1/2 the night they determine you need the CPAP, they hook you up and figure out what pressure you need. Anyway they hook you up to these wires..some on the head to record how deep asleep you are/are not, some on your legs to see if you have restless legs, some on your jaw to see if you clench your teeth or grind them. Some by your eyes I think to tell when you're in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. I had a sleep number bed even. VERY COMFY. Went right to sleep. About midnight or so, they woke me up and asked me to sleep on my back as i was NOT having any episodes. So I tried sleeping on my back. Well I didn't get a CPAP, didn't need one...so I had to stay the next day for a "nap" study. They would have me lay down every 2 hours for a 1/2 hour to see if I could fall asleep. I'm thinking ya right, I got a pretty good nights sleep, there is NO WAY I can fall asleep, not 4-5 different times. I fell asleep each time within 8 minutes. So although I don't have apnea, I do breathes very shallow, and maybe stop breathing for a bit once or twice a night. So don't be embarrassed, use this as an excuse to by a nice pair of PJ's (not a nightgown), and bathrobe. And think of it as spending the night at a hotel. When DH had his, they started trying the CPAP pressures after about 1 1/2 hours, his was so bad. He got to bring one home that next day, I had to wait a couple of weeks. We have two different kinds. If you need one, be aware too that it may take a while to find out what kind of face mask I'll call it, you will need. Make sure what ever kind you get, it works good for YOU. They will tell you that most people do NOT breathe through their mouth, and so you'll only need a nose one. What they don't take into consideration is those people like me who clench their teeth, but leave their lips open, nose ones don't work for me, I need my nose and mouth covered in order to get the benefits of my CPAP (Okay I actually have an APAP, but didn't want to confuse you) Vickey-MN...See MoreChi
