Japanese Garden, ideas and comments
Comments (33)Tony C: It is very late in the evening and I am too tired to read all of the responses in your post, but I wanted to at least post something in the wee hours of the morning. The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is well noted for having the largest Japanese Garden in the continental United States and is also noted for its Japanese Festival held over the labor day weekend. If you link to the site below, you find that there are various links to take you to the international gardens located within this wonderful gem - one of which is the Japanese Garden. While these links will provide some "inspiration", there is nothing like a 2 day visit to this outstanding garden. While I currently live in northwestern Michigan, I was born, bred, and lived for more than 5 decades on the Illinois prairie, where I was able to visit this garden more frequently. If you plan to head in that direction and are the type of person who enjoys staying at a bed & breakfast, I recommend that you contact Maggies Bed & Breakfast in Collinsville, Illinois. She is a retired Librarian who has traveled in the far east via freighters and other means of transportion. Her rates are reasonable, the conversation is excellent and the breakfast are very delicious. If you're a person who enjoys staying at a motel/hotel, there are several excellent choices in the Collinsville, IL area. Collinsville is located very close to one of the Interstate Highways leading into St. Louis and the MBO - not too far west on I-44 - is about a short 15 to 20 minute drive. Hope this information is somewhat helpful and/or inspiring. Comments (23)Schoolhouse, no not a tour. We leave tomorrow for LA, spend the night and the next day fly to Japan. I have family I've never met so they will be our tour guides for the first 2 days and then towards the end of the trip. One of those days we will go to visit my mom's two brothers in a city on the coast about an hour and a half from Tokyo. Our Japanese exchange student is showing us around on the 3rd day in Tokyo. The 4th day is on our own. Then we go to Kyoto for a few days. The next few days will be spent with cousins again near where my mom grew up after the war. Then another couple days at another cousin's house in Isesaki. My original plan was to go to Tokyo and Mito. lol Sjern, it is actually hotter in Kentucky than Tokyo right now but still not going to like the humidity. It'll be in the 80s at the hottest part of the day when we are there. My cousin said it is cool in the morning and muggy during the day. So, my daughter is a big Star Wars fan...I guess I am too. On the way back we are stopping for a side trip to Disney so she can see the new Star Wars area. I booked ANA airlines to and from Japan in hopes of getting on one of their Star Wars themed jets...and I found out that our flights coming and going are one of them! Hopefully that jet won't break and we will be able to fly on it. I hate flying but am kind of excited this trip....See MoreJapan Trip, day 11
Comments (4)There are several Flight Museums in Los Angeles. I'm not sure what you can buy there, however, but I would imagine that they have gift shops. Here are some more aviation museums in California. Here is a list for North America, but California has by far the most, followed by Texas....See MoreJapan trip, last day in Mito/Hitachinaka area
Comments (7)My pieces. I was surprised they came out so good. They fire them and glaze them after you leave. You get to pick the glaze you want and then they mail them to you. My cousin had them mailed to his house. Not sure if he has received them yet or not. Stone sculptures outside.Lunch was delicious and massive. So massive I had to share with Isamu. The pretty blue ceramic dish in the upper left hand corner had the most delicious dish in it. A kind of seafood stew. Custard-like on top with chunks of seafood on the bottom. Probably my favorite thing I had there.Mito park, swans (black and white), egrets, carp, swan boats, famous Shogun statue (not on my computer so I couldn't post it). The round thing on the right side of the picture in the middle of the water is a fountain. Every so often it would turn on. We got there late in the afternoon so no swan boat rides. Just looked around, took pictures and went to eat conveyor belt sushi with Isamu's wife....See Morededtired
