You have me practically salivating to get mine! I waited all year and got up extra early in order to get one when Palatine opened for orders in September. I can't wait!! I hope mine is just as lovely and tantalizing as yours are!! (and mine will be in a pot too!)

What beautiful pictures of AL, Helen. They are just breathtaking. So, do you notice any difference in performance between the one in the ground, and the potted one? Mine is in a large pot, and seems to be doing alright, but it’s growing rather large. I’m impressed by her tolerance to the dry heat. I’m a little hesitant to put her rootstock in my very alkaline clay soil, but I may have no choice. Maybe I’ll wait until her first pruning to decide. Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it right. Your blooms look amazing! So far, my AL blooms have been more orange than yours and the petals are fewer. Mine also seems to have less petals that aren’t as intricately arranged. Maybe you’ve had cooler temperatures than I have? Thanks for posting these. They are magazine worthy, as most of your photos are...... Lisa

Lisa, I have very alkaline soil, and believe me, that never inhibited Augusta--she's huge. Give her plenty of space, though. Growing in the soil might actually up her petal count. She loves the heat, I think, but as it got colder here, just before our big freeze, I noticed that my AL's petal count went down and her colors got more pronounced.

Lisa, roses grow well in the ground, so I put one AL in a pot because I have no room left, lol. The one in pot is smaller and repeats slower.

Lisa, I meant to add that my Augusta is grafted on multiflora rootstock, too, and the alkaline soil made no difference. I think she'd do well in any kind of soil. Diane

Wondering how everyone's Augusta Luise did in the last year...I have one coming in November from Palatine, grafted on multiflora, and another coming in a year from Peter at Freedom Gardens on own roots.

@DDinSB (Z10b Coastal CA) Mine is on multiflora from PalatineRoses and it is perfect in every way in my garden. I have another one in a pot and it needs its roots trimmed. Since it’s such a wonderful rose, I will give away my Peace rose to make room in the ground for the one currently in a pot. Helen

Helen - your ALs are sooo pretty with its dark colors!! This is a rose that everyone should have IMO. And the fragrance is fabulous!!

Deborah - I have two in pots...and mine did terribly...barely grew, no flowers...then a few flowers...but they were small and terrible. Then StrawChicago said that this rose has rogusa heritage (crinkly leaves) and needs better drainage. So I put sand into the soil and it perked right up! So, I agree with her...this rose needs good drainage. The fragrance is wonderful!!

Carole, I did not see the heritage-listed for this rose on HMS nor do I notice the crinkly leaves. Do you have better pictures? Could someone else comment on this?

She was probably just speculating because I said the leaves were all crinkly. I do think this rose needs good drainage.

Thanks for that picture! I found almost all my potted roses need good drainage otherwise with our heavy incessant rain they get drowned to death even with perlite. That's a great picture of the leaves by the way. I would describe them as bullate. I like them.😊

The leaves on my AL look pretty flat and without much shine. I can't believe this rose has rugosa in its genetic background. Diane

I'm dreaming of getting mine next year! I was really mainly wondering about the rugosa due to my heavy clay lime soil. I only have one rugosa and it's not outstanding but it is also in not much sun. I'm glad yours has recovered Carol. That is the main thing! I'm so happy you have overcome your sad soil situation from last summer.

Yeah...that was really sad. Mainly because I used peat moss, bark fines and NOTHING alkaline to balance it out. I'm lucky they survived. Sheesh!! Live and learn. I thought it was the new organic fertilizer I was using. Nope.

This conversation about AL makes me VERY happy I put her where I did. I do not have many truly good spots for roses; my soil is surprisingly alkaline and hard clay plus excessive tree roots and lots of shade.

The spot she is in has good loam and good sun. She does seem to like this spot and I hope moving her a couple of weeks ago (condensing roses to make more room for roses) doesn’t throw her off.

The move was only about three feet so conditions should be the same. She is probably my most coveted rose and I really want her to grow up to look like Diane’s!
