Can anyone remember the name of this book?

A man on a farm, not wealthy, but he did have one slave, an elderly man who couldn't do much work. A young woman, maybe an older child, somehow comes to live with them. I believe she sleeps on the porch. There is an incident with a horse-drawn wagon crossing a rain-swollen creek. I liked the book and would like to recommend it to someone.

Wish I could delete because I thought to go through my Amazon purchases and found it. It's Spinning Jenny by McLain.
