Hire a Painter or a "Cabinet Guy" for Kitchen Cabinet Color Change?
Comments (19)Ellie, your new home is lovely. I looked into painting my current kitchen and pretty much what Live_oak_writes is what I found to be true in terms of prep, cost and quality. The guy I found here in Michigan ONLY paints cabinets and that is the kind of painter I would suggest or a cabinet shop. I am not trying to criticize house painters, but I would only want someone who specializes in cabinets (not a painter of rooms, exteriors, etc). He told me he would remove all the doors and spray in his shop (after sanding, filling in holes, etc.). The boxes would have to be sprayed on-site of course and you need to verify their prep for that. He was willing to paint a sample door for me (find an old maple door at Habitat, etc. and have them use that as a test). I liked what I saw. His Facebook page was impressive. My kitchen is not as nice as yours and I determined it just was not worth it. I recall a thread here recently in which someone painted professionally and it was absolutely wonderful. I am not as good as others at finding pictures/threads, but I will look....See MoreNeed opinion on glass vs regular cabinet ASAP
Comments (16)cpartist - Yes, we finally finalized the kitchen plans! I was too scared to post them out here again for fear that my design have more things to change! However, I did make quite of few of the changes initially suggested by everyone such as adding a 2nd sink (I'm SO excited about this... 2 sinks, 2 garbage pullouts, 2 garbage disposals!), reduced island size for more aisle clearance, changed the upper cubes to 18" and also adjusted cabinet sizes so that more of them lined up and it hopefully isn't as overwhelming. There were some things people wanted me to do such as add another window and/or keep the small one we had, but I just couldn't go that route seeing as we have a view of pool equipment or a wall! And glass it is for those 2 cabinets in question!...See MoreWhat to do with the upper kitchen cabinets?
Comments (41)Open shelving are great for photo shoots. They’re a terrible idea in reality. All the storage loss, the continual dust and visual clutter. Add another vote from me for removing the surrounds over the windows. And of course, scrubbing the uppers well before proceeding. You can take a door off and bring it in to be optically scanned for a color match. If you can afford a little work on the uppers, I would try a couple things. Find cabinetmaker who might be able to modify those doors by cutting down the trim around the doors and maybe applying a faux shaker trim to match. Also look into taking out the panels of at least a couple ad adding glass panes. Though I suspect that may start adding up to the same as replacements. No harm in discovery, though. You could keep the two tones, but I think I would paint to match (or even paint both a different color) despite the difference in doors. I would paint all the interiors bright white. If you take any doors off and leave shelves exposed or add glass, a colorful wallpaper or fabric in the backs would be pretty! Be sure to get the maker and style from the previous owner for future reference. A colorful backsplash will draw attention away from mismatched doors. Finally, change hardware for all to add cohesiveness. The knobs on the doors are visually awkward. They should all be pulls (get the same size as are already on the drawers) and they should be repositioned. Wood filler and touch up paint done well should disguise the poorly-placed knobs. Good luck and congrats!...See MoreAdding glass to cabinet uppers, which doors would you choose?
Comments (10)herbflavor, love the ideas tossed out for the pantry! I love the idea of doing all of the doors instead of a couple. Hubby is happy about the frosted glass vs clear glass suggestion. rebunky, yes, I can see what you mean with regards to the corner glass not being in the same "style" as the other elements that I have added. I would consider swapping it out and making them all match. I love the pic of the 2nd pic from the top that herbflavor posted above, just is my style. My hubby however is not and therefore, we end up with elements mixed between styles! grrr...he is starting to see the light. lighting - yes...hubby says that we can easily extend our current undercounter lighting into the upper cabinets, and would do so. all - thank you so much! I can now see that grouping the glass cabinets together vs scattered is the way to go!...See Morelorishopaholic
