he said it’d look better if we added a trim to the stairs... now I’m regretting it because I didn’t think the transition would look like this. Should I have him carry the trim down that hallway? I’m not really sure what to do to make it look better.

You are correct - it looks bad. Continue the top piece of trim on the wall section.

If this is his idea of a 'good idea' then I would HATE to see his version of a 'good floor job'.

Have your floors been refinished? Are there any problems with that job? Is the trim the only thing that is the matter here?

Yeah, our floors are finished. he did a good job on the floors. I’m just not really sure why he’s having such an issue with the baseboards and trim.

It looks like he ran out of trim...which is why it is a weird connection (or disconnect) at the stairs. The stair trim is OBVIOUSLY a different height than the baseboards. And the odgee edge on the little piece that is touching the baseboard tells me he was running out of product.

He probably is NOT a carpenter which means he may not have all the tools needed to get this 'right'.

I'm going to guess some of the baseboards were already in place and the stuff on the stairs was added later?

What is the trim in the rest of the house? Trim added to the stairway needs to be the same. He might be a flooring expert, but not a carpenter.

We don't have trim anywhere else in the house. I asked if it would look funny just having trim on the stairs and no where else and he said it's fine and it will incomplete without it. There was a lot of trim leftover so running out of materials was not an issue.

I am confused. You are showing baseboard in the hall. Was that there previously? Is this baseboard in the rest of the house?

Yes, it's the baseboartd that was their before. same as the rest of the house

This is commonly done to hide the gap where the staircase stringer and wall meet. It's either a small cove molding or quarter round. In more decorative situations the baseboard can used instead.

At this point, I would call in a finish carpenter and have this done correctly. No sense in calling him back. Often you can find a retired carpenter who does handyman work, who will do a small job like this.

so i should have him continue the trim along the rest of the baseboard in the hallway like in that picture above? That's what that pic looks like it does to me. I don't know why he keeps telling me that the trim is just for stairs. The other side of the hallway doesn't have trim, but the stairs end into a door frame so it doesn't really matter. It's a weird house... He said he's going to make it right and wants us to be happy because he knows we've had a TON of issues with this house. I just want to make sure I ask for the right thing.

I mean who puts in a piece of wood that has the wrong angle cut, leaves a gap and it doesnt match the rest................im sorry but I wouldnt fall for the " he wants to make it right " act, otherwise he would not have put that piece in at all before getting the right miter cut...

He used the wrong kind of trim for the skirt. It should have matched the baseboard. See how the molding is different? If he did not see that this looks bad, I would not trust him to make it right. If you do trust him to make it look right, then go ahead. At least have him show you a photo of exactly what it will look like when finished.

RL Relocation LLC - lets be calm here. If he wants them to be happy, she should let him try. The problem is that there is a "v"cut at the top of the stairs where the stair trim meets the baseboard. There should not be a miter cut there, instead it should run right into the trim at the top of the stair with just a straight seam. Then run the ogee top trim piece on top of that as well. It should all look like it is the same. This is NOT hard to fix.

The easy fix is to remove all the base cap and replace the baseboard with a longer piece. The cap piece is not needed, since the original baseboards are tapered at the top. The cap on the side boards need to match the original. It would need to be plane, scraped and sanded in place.
