Comments (3)I agree it is more a matter of style of the home. But "out West" here they are still used a *lot* in high-end homes, which are usually fairly ornate. Comments (15)Well all I know is I am still installingiron balusters here in Richmond Va in Aug 2018 and I did my first installation back in 2007. I just installed some plain square balusters for an interior designer who swore against them (she wanted a real thin baluster for this particular job so I suggested giving iron balusters a go) she now loves the look. Many of the model homes have the twist and basket series installed or go with the standard wood option because of material cost and labor. Comments (18)Wood or metal? My husband and I had that question when we were planning our stairs. I looked through Houzz and saw a couple of examples of balusters that used both, so that's what we did! It wasn't so much what was in 'style,' but more, what would make it like the rest of our home - it was very US. It was the firs time he had made a stairway, and it was made in such a way that we can take down the railing, newel posts, and balusters to stain them, and stain the stairs too.
