Advice - billed for design services before agreed to scope
Comments (16)I can’t even imagine billing anyone any amount before an agreement especially a friend. I don’t charge for an initial meeting of approx an hour. This meeting is for each of us to gather information about the scope of the project and to determine if we are comfortable working together. Then I follow up with an email describing my understanding of the scope asking for their confirmation or changes. And we develop agreement from there including fee structure and end point. I describe expectations and deliverables before I do any design work. I try very hard to be as clear as possible. I have hence, had only one experience something like this situation. Early in my career, i got ahead of this process, letting my enthusiasm get the better of me. I ended up eating $1,800 of product she had tentatively approved but not formally approved. A friend had referred me to her and this problem permeated our friendship too. We ultimately overcame it, but not totally. So this is a really tough lesson but I learned it well. Never had it happen again. Get with your friend and try to work out an agreement and I hope the friendship is strong enough to move forward with caring and greater understanding. Best of luck....See MoreKohler Bathroom Design Services
Comments (2)They are there to give you a list of Kohler products to buy, not “design” your bathroom. If you are making only decorating changes, and are OK with all Kohler everything, it should fit your needs. If you want tile suggestions that aren’t Ann $acks (part of Kohler) then you will find it lacking. I *like* Kohler. But what they are doing is misleading to call a design service. It isn’t. It’s paying someone to sell you things. If you want an independent design, with the freedom to source anything you want, then hire an independent K&B Designer. -—Independent CAPS Kitchen and Bath Designer of 22 years. Plus, the marketing “sell” of the “discount” is non existent in the real world. They use discount from list price. But no one pays list price. No one. Build dot com (which Houzz won’t even allow a link to, because they are competitors) sells at such a low margin that I can’t even buy from my wholesaler, put any kind of service markup on it and sell at that low of a price. If I spend time to source and purchase products for a project, you will pay more than you would doing all of that logistics yourself. For the added logistics service. But “discounts” are not the reason to use a designer. You’re buying knowledge and experience that benefit you. That comes at a price to be paid, however that is charged....See MoreHow much to budget for interior design services?
Comments (7)Regarding floor outlet: The electrician for our remodel put the wiring in for the floor outlet in the crawl space for our house, but did not actually install the floor outlet yet. He said that he would come back and do it once we were completely finished and had rugs and furniture and such; that he had installed many earlier in the process and usually ended up moving them later, so this was his method to avoid that....See MoreRecommendations needed - Design Services - Northern IN
