IMO if you like cooler colors generally like silver instead of gold for instance then I do not think gray is going out of style. I love black and white and silver so I have gray walls I sure don’t think beige would work. I often use a grayed / green for clients if they don’t want gray or beige or white the color is still really neutral but none of those. Gray Wisp from BM is nice one I sometimes even cut it 25% for just a hint of color.

Yes, it's a trend and it's moving on. Like others say, if you like it, fine. But if you're going to be buying new furnishings and making a large investment on items that will go with grays, then I'd think twice and do more research.

What are your furnishings? That's a really important question. I wouldn't just paint gray as a default. Gray everything is very overdone. Just the same as beige everything was very overdone. Any color when used right can look very nice. I'm drawn to warmers colors and never jumped on the gray wagon. I'm very, very tired of seeing it and I'm not old. It's 'just paint' but it's not. It's time and money. 3,000 sq. foot is a lot of time (if doing it yourself) and money either way.

Gray (and whites/off-whites) go better with cleaner colors and beiges (and creams as well as some off-whites) go better with more muted, earthy colors. Definitely start with - what are your hard finishes, what are your furnishings?

If you're looking for a greige (mix of gray and beige - warmer than gray, cooler than beige) a good one is BM Feather Down. If looking for a default neutral with no other considerations I'd personally go with that. It's the lighter version of BM Manchester Tan which is a really good mid range neutral.

ETA - all that said, I've read here SW Agreeable Gray is a nice color.

It’s just paint, go with what you like. In my area ( So California ), whites seem to be the most popular. Also, I’m seeing a trend back to warmer colors in furniture, art, etc. But I don’t care about what’s popular, actually, I prefer things a little differenot from everyone else.

The best thing to do is to ignore the trends. Use a color you like, that goes with your furnishings. If you like gray (I do), then use gray. If you like beige, (I dont), then use beige. Trends come and go quickly. Best to not follow them. I use shades of turquoise in most of my rooms. Its my favorite color. It makes me happy. I dont care if its a trend, or not. I also have some rooms that are gray.They were gray before gray became a trend. I like gray. . The one color I will never have in my house is any shade of green. I like green outside, but, not inside my house. However, shades of green, do go with most furnishings and work well on home interiors. Point of this is, use what you like, not whats a trend.

I agree with K R above. We are currently doing a major renovation in our home, built in ‘98. Back then it seemed everyone was doing warm neutrals. Our first home, built in the 80’s, was brown/beige and we grew tired of it. We preferred the grays and blues and updated it a few years before we sold it. Only one couple mentioned the personal paint color, the rest found it refreshing, and it sold in 2 weeks. We continued that palette in this home since we liked it and figured were going to be living in it quite some time. Fast forward to now, we are warming it up with warm neutrals while everyone seems to still be doing gray. We are in the Tampa area and pros I have consulted told me not to worry, warm neutrals are coming back around. One even told me Tampa is a little behind the trend as well. I would have no trouble choosing quartz, porcelains, or paint if I went with gray, it is so prevalent here. I personally got tired of looking at model homes for kitchen and bath ideas; the grays were plentiful, almost predictable, some with medium to dark wood or gray blended wood-look tile on the floor. One flooring person told me white tile is coming in, but that is what we got rid of in favor of a beige travertine-look porcelain. We are going for a traditional Tuscan look overall. I say do what you like best if you plan to stay in your home for awhile. You don’t have to follow the crowd. But if you plan to sell, know your market. You don’t have to follow the crowd. Maybe a greige would be a happy medium?

Midwest gal here and grey is still everywhere. I'm starting to see decor with a bit more color, but it's still the predominantly Joanna Gaines inspired "modern farmhouse" look of muted everything.

We just painted our kitchen and family room SW Anew Grey, which is more of a warm grey/greige. We don't paint very often because the family room has a vaulted ceiling and it's hard for us to do it ourselves. The color we had before was SW Whole Wheat, which was a goldy/greeny/beige which was pretty popular with the Tuscan decor area (we had a designer pick that color for us). There is nothing wrong with that color, but we wanted to change it up. I do have some grey furniture, purchased way before the grey trend started because I like grey. Our other furniture is black so the grey goes well with it.

The big paint manufacturers are going with more bright colors, as far as their colors of the year, but I haven't seen it take off in my area yet.

Trends come and go at the blink of an eye. Do you like gray and would you like to live with it on your walls? If so, use it. Trends are marketing gimmicks designed to generate profit for businesses, and chasing them is an exercise in futility. I wouldn't even give a second thought to what's in, what's out ... Paint your home whatever color(s) you like.

Seems like the grey on grey on grey is what’s out.

In houses for sale in my area of Southern California, white is in, gray is losing ground except in the lowest priced suburbs. If I were paying thousands of dollars to paint a house that I am not selling, I'd choose something on the upswing, not on the downswing, but only a color I loved.

Are you painting for yourself or for resale? Paint needs to go with the decor of the room.

Why does every room have to be the same color? You could have different colors in different rooms!!

Is the house being painted as a preparation for resale?

Is it empty, or are the furnishings inside? What colors are predominant?

More importantly-what are semi-permanent elements? The flooring, the tiles, the cabinetry?

The color you choose should work with what's already there, not against it.

It also should be good looking, most of the time, in the light you have-which is unique to your house-where it stands, how it's oriented, does it get a lot of sunshine, etc.

If people are doing gray, and their tiles are imitating Tuskan stone-then to me it's a sign I need to repaint. Creams and beiges and tans would work better. As an example.

If the flooring is wood-one is less restricted, but still there are different wood tones.

If the cabinetry is very creamy in color-one would want warmer hues where the cabinetry is.

If most colors are cool-one wants to continue cooler sceme. If they're "fresh", meaning brighter, clearer,, not muted-obviously one wants to go with clearer colors. And vice versa.

In short, you never paint in a vacuum, even if for a resale. You get informed by what's already in your house-and you go from there.

People might like what's "in" or they might not-but one thing is sure, what they're looking for is a sense of harmony.

Greiges, off-whites, colors in-between are eaier to work with sometimes , but one still needs to pick the right one. What looks great in one house might not work in the other.

There are other colors that human eye frequently interpret as neutrals. Some greens and blues for example. We're surrounded by them in the nature a lot-so we percieve many of these as background. Maybe you have rooms where these would work best.

The more you tell us about what's already there, the more we can be of help.

It needs to look pulled together and nice and harmonious. What color it will be? I don't know. It depends. But for sure not on what's "in"

(having said that-in terms of strictly what's in, that one shouldn't pursuit unless he loves it for real-gray is not "in" anymore. Or rather, gray on gray on gray is not "In" anymore. People got tired. Trends changed. They change every 10-15 years. Greige is still going strong though., White is. Off white is. Colors. Jewel tones. Natural wood. The list is long..)

The problem with these trends is that people will want to add them to their existing house even if they do not go with the fixed finishes. Saw this a few months ago in quite a few house for sale in Florida. Houses with warm finishes and pinkish travertine and they painted the walls gray to "update" the house. An off white color would have been much better.

When my parents recently moved into their new home they used Benjamin Moore Whisper White (it's actually gray) on all of the rooms, kitchen and bath included. It turned out so lovely and depending on the time of day has hints of blue to it which gives such a nice breezy feel. They were able to use all of their current furniture and decor, which is a slightly different style from room to room and it all looks amazing. I say go with what feels right for you and you're current style.
