Thermador Warning-Fire Hazard!
Comments (5)Yes, I know the recalls started I think in 2002, then again in 2007 and most recently in 2010. I purchased my oven in late 2007. However never used the self cleaning until last month. And, yes, Thermador is involved now, as is the Safety Commission. The oven cannot be repaired. It burned. And it took down my entire new kitchen with it...I have probably close to 100 grand in damage. The damage went into other rooms as well. All my furniture has been removed, rugs destroyed, wood floors burned. I had the Thermador Pro Grande, 6 burner, all gas, stainless steel. I don't have the exact model as it was on the original manual which the investigators now have. My reason for posting this is to alert people about the possible danger in using the self cleaning on these high end pro style ranges. I know many come without that feature and in fact I paid extra to have it in this one. There might be a reason many manufacturers don't offer the self cleaning mode. It heats up to something like 900 degrees - possibly too hot for residential use. The Safety commission just called me last week for further details. An appointment was scheduled with them and Thermador to come to the house and look at the oven. Thermador never even showed up. The range has now been removed to the fire investigator's evidence room. Perhaps all manufacturers use the same heating element. The problem with Thermador is there is a gap in the insulation and when heated to that degree of heat in the self cleaning mode, it ignites the cabinets, and floors. I am strongly urging anyone who has the range to have Thermador come and check it. This fire just happened but I suspect a recall will be forthcoming....See MorePlease help redesign/decorate our Dog Room/Fire Room
Comments (5)sueb20, Thanks for your reply. I like the ideas of gray wall and ceiling. To date I have always painted my ceilings white but am willing to try something new. The right yellow/gold sofa WOULD look wonderful. I will definitely paint the paneling the same color as the walls. We'll replace what we can first, with drywall. Lots of the gaps you see in the paneling are due to the forced hot water pumbing system which we removed. Oh the projects that just drag on.... Hi tinan - Two votes to paint the beams lighter and two to keep them the same, hmm. They are structural but after 15 years of seeing them, I may be ready to not see them. With the rich dark floor (this is my first dark floor ever and I'm so pleased with the feeling it conveys) to 'ground' the space, I think I like the idea of a lighter backdrop. The light IS attached to the beam and is so going away. (DH bangs his head constantly into it). Hi teacats, glad you like the sconce. Regarding gray walls - do you think that's too much grey? I appreciate the link to the burnt ember (I haven't tried that yet). It's only paint and I can certainly paint a few areas with different color swatches. I do have a rug which I love; here's a close up of it (with of course, the requisite dog): AnnieDeighnaugh - Nice to hear from you! The floor is more grey than brown. The stove has a fake fire-resistant I'm sure - weird large grey rock backsplash and is built on a rounded cement surface. I've often thought about tiling the cement floor and front with something from Fireclay or Heath, and eventurally replacing the weird faux surface. Do you think I could actually do something to make this look better in the meantime?!! Good progress yesterday. DH has completed the electrical and installed most of the insulation (for sound). We picked up 4 sheets of drywall and should get it up this morning....See MorePlease Help- Code Violation
Comments (32)To the thread starter, I don't want to seem like I'm getting down on you, but this quote is bothering me: "I find it very unfair that they are asking us to do this." I find it unfair that you did work against code, you did work much easier and cheaper than all your neighbors, and you are complaining that you are being forced to make it right. I find it unfair that you are trying to find a way out of making it safe and correct. Do the right think, make it right. Stop trying to find a way out of it, stop asking for a break, you do not deserve special treatment. As others have mentioned, if you took out a loan for the money it will cost to fix it you would be able to get a renter in to pay off the loan by now. The longer you sit on it the more it will cost you in lost rental income. BTW, in my state you are alowed to do your own electrical work in your own single family home but you are NOT allowed to do work in a multi family dwelling. So in your situation you wouldn't even be able to get a permit unless you had a contractors license. What is the law in your area? Does your inspector know your house is zoned for 2 family?...See MorePlease Help me in finding a fire place for my living room media wall??
Comments (6)Check out Dimplex.com, they have many electric fireplace units as well as many fireboxes to choose from and mount on the wall. You can most likely find a local dealer to see in person. We recently had a custom light natural maple credenza made from an Amish company and had a Dimplex firebox installed in it. It needs no special venting because the hot air blows out the front into the room but it does require a separate line due to the heat fan (if you don't use the heat fan, then maybe you won't need the separate line). We have clear glass beads on the bottom of the firebox and it is essentially an LED light show! We actually have a wall mount firebox installed in a piece of furniture. http://dimplex.com/en/fireplaces/wallmounts We never thought we'd use the heat element, but we have used it once or twice and it works great. Honestly, we are so happy with our finished product, decorating our FL condo is still a work in progress, but here is what we have so far. I know its not really what you're looking for, but just an FYI. I wish the pic would show off the flame/lights as they really look, we think they're beautiful....See Morecatlady999
