Is White Boring? Exterior Color Help Please...
Comments (33)Hope everyone had a great weekend! This is an update on our progress... We talked over the weekend, and for inspiration I kept looking over the photos that suero and roobear did for us-- turns out we are both really leaning toward staying with the white... Hubby thinks we should paint the shutters black and door as well, but I am not sure how I feel about a black door. I like the idea of a red door such as "Brick Dust" (Lowes- Olympic paint)or BM's country redwood and I would love to hear your suggestions on this. If we are going to stay with an all white house, I am looking for a combination that would really help the front porch to stand out there and say "Welcome". I would also love to hear which whites you recommend since the white currently on the house is one that I can't seem to locate anymore. It's called "picket white" which is a color wheel paint but it is no longer in their paint deck. I remember I tried to keep it somewhat soft and not stark white... a fairly close match might be SW Pure White but it's hard to tell. Our painter uses ICI (glidden) paint company so most likely we will be color matching to the more familiar/popular ones. I am prepared for this and I have my SW and BM fan decks ready not to mention the bags of swatches I have gathered from Lowes and Home Depot! However, If I am unable to find an acceptable ICI/Glidden white do you think it's possible to color match one? I am just not sure how that will work out with a white. Good news is that we are getting closer thanks all of your help and encouragement so I hope you won't mind sharing your thoughts once again on what you think would be a good combination (any brands specific color names would be great!) for the shutters, door, and a white for the body. I should add that we will be considering the stone, since it would be a nice touch, but depending on the cost it might not be an option for us at this time. For now, we have to work with what we have. Thanks once again!...See Moreexterior shutters and front door color
Comments (8)Around here, it seems more people do their front doors a different color. Someone was posting about their area, though, and said it was more common for them to be the same. So, it's not right or wrong. Kinda depends on your area and what you would be comfortable with in that regard, I think. Some houses probably just look better one way or the other, as well....See MoreIdeas to fix my boring house front?
Comments (39)Wowza! I love reading everyone's posts. Thank so much. I was away for several days because of house showings. Each showing requires a lot of prep work (long story, but pets are involved too). BTW, mortgage rates just dropped in the last few days, so more people started house shopping right now. What a great bunch of ideas and insights here. I love the posts with sharp analyses too. The photos people posted here look great too. As some people mentioned, my budget is really small. For now, here's a quick update and one question: So far, I've pruned the shrubs to better proportions. I pulled out a groundcover that was raggedy this time of year. Things look a little better. Will be considering doing more. Question. This subject is beyond my grasp and I'm confused: After I remove the storm door, I think the choice of paint color for the door framing could affect the visual proportions of the house. For example, if the framing was the same color as the door, the door might look bigger. If the framing were a different color than the door color, the door might look smaller. I don't know if this is true. But if true, what would be the desirable color choice considering the house proportions and other colors present? Another factor that might influence color choice: I just noticed that the primary door is recessed about five inches behind the front edge of the door framing. Also the framing itself is not the front most surface of the house. That is, the front edge of framing is behind a layer of brick, and on top of the brick are the shutters. ( Earlier I was thinking about a framing color as if the framing were just a shallow picture frame on the front surface of the house). I might be confusing myself with these thoughts... Ideas and comments appreciated. Thanks again....See MoreExterior help, shutters and front door color?
Comments (6)We did something similar recently. Our house is also cream. Unless you're going to install a different size or style of shutters, Instead of replacing them, just have them painted. It's less expensive and you'll end up with the same results. We went with a dark teal on the shutters and love it! Then for the door, depending on the what you like, you could do red, gray, a fun apple green or a lighter shade of the teal. They were hunter green before. This is the shade we chose but I've included some other options below. My husband wouldn't agree to painting the door, but this was my inspiration for it. I love the way it looks....See MoreDavidR
