White countertop and no under cabinet lights? Anyone done this?
Comments (8)It seems that most people here love their uc lights. I find I almost never use ours. We have dark gray/black counters, medium dark cabinetry and light wood floors, 8 1/3 foot ceilings. Our kitchen is 13' x 16'. Our lighting scheme looks a lot like yours--5 recessed lights along the perimeter cabinets (centered on edges of counters so that shadows aren't created)+ one in the middle of the work "u" + 2 along the corridor through kitchen, pendants or fixtures over the peninsula and sinks. We have a light in our range hood which I use a lot. We have a lot of natural light but since I am usually cooking when it's dark outside, it doesn't usually factor in. I find I have more than enough light without the uc lights (in fact, even the 5 recessed lights over the perimeter counters are rarely used.) It's not as though I'm just not in the habit of using the uc lights. I used them a lot in our old kitchen since the only other light was a 1-bulb schoolhouse fixture in the middle of the room. If I knew ahead how little I would use the uc lights in the renovated kitchen I probably would have used the money elsewhere and would have been able to decrease the clutter on our backsplash by 3 switches. I use the uc lights, at most, half-a-dozen times/year (I turned one on about a month ago and dh gasped because he totally forgot we had them since he never sees me using them.) I don't particularly like ambient lighting and I prefer task lighting from above rather than under eye level. Light from the ceiling has more space to spread and the uc lights feel more like spot lights to me (even the long fluorescent fixtures we used to have) since there is less vertical distance for the light to spread. It's a personal preference--it seems that your wife may be in this camp since she never used the ones she had in her apt. The lights we use regularly are: 1. the 1 center & 2 walkway recessed lights are used the most, 2. the fixture over the peninsula (prep area), 3. the pendants over the sinks, 4. the hood light. The uc lights are rarely used and the 5 recessed lights over the counters are just about never used but I figure they may come in handy as my eyes age further. Then again, I never see my mother (in her late 80's) use her uc lights....See MoreBeating the dead horse: counter-height breakfast bar overhangs
Comments (27)try hard, i think you should not forgo your breakfast bar or your ability to use it comfortably. if i understand the way you describe it, the 12 inch overhang will only protrude into the doorway, not the actual room, and then only by 3 inches. it really sounds fine to me. unused, sitting there with stools tucked, i think it will be seen as the kitchen. whether you use the 9 or the 12, your actual bodies or backs of stools will probably graze the family room but so what? counters and bars are often transitional spaces to the next room anyway, and i think that either way it will be fine and you will enjoy it so go for the 12! by the way, former owners of my house made the counter bar extend 11 inches which we find comfortable for knees. however, they removed the wall between kitchen and dining room and the entire counter protrudes the 11 inches into our small dining room which completely throws off the center of the room and makes the stools way too close to the dining table. i can't gut the whole space, so i live with it and really love using the counter bar. your situation is far far better and i bet it will look fantastic. good luck and let us know what you decided....See MoreBreakfast nook integrated into a work counter?
Comments (17)I just googled 'island bench' and 'bench at island' and didn't find any. I have a long bench on one side of my island, opposite the working side. The island is 34" tall, which is a good work-table height for me. It was made using a dining table, with added feet and a platform/shelf. The bench is 23" tall, so the shelf is convenient to use as a footrail. Would your L-shaped bench be bolted to the floor?...See MoreHelp !! Has anyone installed Pietra countertops by Silestone?
Comments (287)Susanne, here is a photo from my local Home Depot. They have a display with Pietra and a full height backsplash. The cabinetry is a creamy white, and they did the side splashes as well. It's indoor, store lighting and no under-cabinet lighting. I haven't been able to decide what to do for a backsplash either. I've been sitting with different tiles leaned up against the wall for almost a year....See Morechocolatebunny123
