Am I too late now?

Temps are turning cooler, a lot of my in-ground hostas are looking fallish, and we’re supposed to have some early mornings in the 30s later this week. Is it too late to get some potted hostas in the ground?

I’ve been working on getting some planted over the last two months... but still have a bunch in pots. And my goal eventually is to have almost all of them in the ground. Maybe I’ll have to over-winter in the garage again?

go for it .... its a lot easier than messing with pots over winter ....

in my MI.. with ground freeze... heave would be an issue ... not sure how that applies to your area ...

to be safe .. plant them ... and then cover them with some mulch or ground leaves .... after they are fully dormant ..... avoiding the exact crown itself ...

the idea is to keep the soil around it from warming too much ,... during warm spells in winter ....

lets be realistic ... fall just started a week ago ... winter doesnt really start until xmas week ... so you have plenty of time ... for the plant to settle in ... the soil to settle.. and to get ready for winter ...

i would bare root and plant in native soil ....

if you have some tiny minis.. i would defer to others on those ...

what else you going to do with them .... never forget.. THEY ARE HOSTA .... they will live on the driveway if nothing else... so just get it done .... up here ... i would mulch them well to prevent winter heave.. but i suppose it isn't an issue in z8 ... you will want to avoid total dryness in winter ... so you might mulch them .... ken

Go ahead and go for it. Our weather is so variable here that more times than not you'll still get a good crop even from crops put in the ground somewhat late. I don't use potting soil in the trench, but you can if you want. However, be sure it is good and moist when you use it, because most soil-less potting mixes are high in peat and when peat gets really dry, it is almost impossible to get it to hold water again. So, keep it evenly moist all along until your seeds are up. I use compost instead of potting soil. I've not planted much for fall because the cool-down has not been very kind to us This week isn't over yet, and we've had highs of 109 and 106, in each case with the high temp going 8 or 9 degrees higher than forecast. I do hope that the cool weather gets here and stays here. I'd like to think we've seen the last of temperatures in the 100s at least. Fall weather is highly variable. We've been here 14 years and have had the first hard freeze of fall as early as the last week of September a couple of times and as late as mid-December once or twice. More normally it arrives in my area between mid-November and Thanksgiving. So, I never worry too much about planting the fall garden late since there's always a good chance the really cold weather will arrive late as well. If I'd planted fall crops on time, the poor things would have had to deal with high temps in the 106-112 range, so I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the cool down. Amandasplit, I just measured mine and looked at the order from the cabinet maker. The order calls it square crown and it was for 3 inch and 2 inch crown Then top piece on mine measures 2 inches so I assume the one under it is the 3 inch. The underneath piece is actually showing only 1 inch. So the total height of my crown is 3 inches not the 3-3/4 that I said earlier. You might still be able to do a step crown with 2 inch on top and only have a 1/2 inch of the underneath board showing. Hope this info helps. I love how your kitchen is looking. Garage does not work for me for some reason. I do outside on a side, covered with leaves. Works well if in shady spot. There will be no root growth anymore but not a problem as soil will remain warm for while yet.

Thanks all! I saw Ken’s response yesterday and proceeded to plant... managed to get 11 in the ground, along with some other plants. And I got some dried perennials cleaned-up. It’s supposed to be pretty nice this week, so maybe I can get a few more done during the morning hours (I work afternoons). My seedlings from last year are still in very small pots... I’ll put them in the garage. Linda- I’ve had pretty good luck doing that for several years.

Kathy- I had to laugh out loud when I read your question: how long will the cold snap last??? Well, probably until about March. With a few warmups here and there. It’s actually really beautiful here right now, with just a few early morning temps in the 30s. But the season is definitely changing.
