The surround is so neutral, I think if you hang a large, colorful piece of art over the fireplace, the surround will barely be noticed. I don't think painting it is going to make that much of a change.

As Olychick says, a large, beautiful art work over the fireplace would do much more for your room than painting the fireplace or adding a mantel. Choose a palette and subject you like and create a focal point for the room. Do add drapes to the blank windows that work with the art work. You have a lot of golden tones from the floor and wood finishes, so here's an example of how to enrich the room with art instead of add-ons to the fireplace.

When you're making decisions like this you have to think of the room as a whole. Frankly the stone surround is the best feature in the room currently.

Is the chocolate brown wall to wall staying?

If the TV cabinet is staying, it might be better to duplicate the wood finish with blinds on the large window which could also benefit from some type of drapery panels to add some color to the room.

There is something off with the light bulbs in your kitchen.............way too cool in color except for one. I'd fix that because the color of the light does nothing for the kitchen finishes.

We would need a lot more info before tackling the FP I would be changing the carpet beofre worrying about the FP since it looks like you have wood???? floor in the kitchen and DR and this is an open space the floors should all be thesame.Before choosing any paint the lighting needs to be addressed so LEDs in 4000K will make colors look the same in all times of the day. BTW I dislike corner fireplaces and often just ignore them in furniture placement

Ill be sure to get better quality pictures up today to give a better idea. But to answer a few questions-

Housegal- I am currently in the market for drapes, so I'm glad you brought them up! I was originally thinking of something sheer and neutral to layer over the shades, but I like the pop of color in your example. I guess I should decide on those before the fireplace? I'll get a better picture up today, but the couches are greyish and as you can see, the carpet is brown. With that info, what color/texture do you think could help me out?

Beverly- Yes, the carpet is staying. We replaced the flooring everywhere else but because we have a young baby we wanted to keep carpet to roll around on. I am currently in the market for drapes to layer over the cellular shades but I dont have a good decorator eye for color or texutre. And yes, good catch with the lights. The light bulbs are all skewhampus throughout the house. We haven't had a chance to go and switch them to make them uniform since moving in.

Patricia- We did just replace the flooring everywhere except in the living room in front of the tv. because we have a young baby and wanted to keep carpet to roll around on. If I had my way the carpet would have been replaced as well, but you have to give and take sometimes :) Replacing light bulbs and getting new fixtures is still on the to-do list. So, are you suggesting 4000k? Or against it?

I agree with BeverlyFLADeziner - addition of a mantle would go a long way towards making the fireplace look less bland. You could possible leave the tile and apply the mantel to the wall so that the tile surround looks like it's part of the fireplace.

Really, really bold art over the fireplace and drapes that coordinate with the art will make you forget all about painting the surround and add a focal point away from the huge TV.

We still have plenty of things on the to-do list to actually have the house “finished”, and having a good accent color to work with would be sooo much easier for me to finish throughout the house.

Art lovers usually start with an art work and choose paint colors and furnishings that harmonize with the art. However, you're going the other direction since you already have your furnishings. First of all, you'll be looking for a vertical piece that will cover most of the wall above the fireplace. What subjects do you think you might like? What's the palette in the room right now? (Wall and floor colors?) Landscape? Skyscape? Abstract? Realistic? Start to think about this. Look at what Beverly and Olychick posted. Notice how the art and curtains pull the eye away from the massive TV and balance out the space. I like the color block idea that Beverly chose. We haven't seen enough of the living room to make a call on this. Good luck!

Can you match the existing stone and do the entire wall? I don't think a mantel sticking our from the flat corner is going to improve the look.

I agree with the last few posts. If it's in your budget, doing a new floor-to-ceiling fireplace in the corner (stacked stone is nice) will make the fireplace feel more intentional. Right now it does feel like an afterthought and doesn't stand out as a feature in the room.
