Do you have any idea what the book title is ?

A friend who is a retired English professor and avid reader suggested a fiction book recently. Unfortunately I didn't write it down at the time but did search it on Amazon and recall a sketchy impression of the plot.

I've asked my friend for the title but she suffers from memory loss and doesn't recall suggesting it.

*sigh*

Here goes : A woman moves into a neighborhood and becomes friends with her next door neighbor. Little by little the neighbor attaches herself to this woman by asking her to do favors, care for her child etc and eventually this becomes a very complex, toxic relationship.

Does anyone have any idea what book this is ?

Was it The Woman Next Door by Sue Watson? That's the closest I can find on Google.

Thank you everyone who responded!!! I decided that I would just go out and pull them up since they were big enough...and, while I had something left to stir fry. lol Hidden in amongst the plants were tons and tons of slugs....gross little buggers! I have tons of them since my yard has turned into a bog with all the rain we have had recently. I guess i'm going to be eating a large number of eggs to crush up shells and place around my plants! lol It's been so rainy...I think the salt or sand would just wash away right now. Thank you for your help though!!

Most important to me is that an author provide realistic and complete information about the real drawbacks of the plants. Glowing, idealized descriptions are available for free in catalogs, where all the plants are spectacular, completely adaptable to various difficult situations, and trouble-free. It irks me no end to purchase a book that does not include information like susceptibility to pests and disease, reaction to less than ideal conditions, tendency to sprawl or spread ... you know what I mean. Nobody is perfect, and that goes for plants as well as people. A good gardening book delves into the flaws, not just the merits, of each perennial it covers. Also, the photos should NOT be close-ups of the flowers, they should show what the plants actually look like. This kind of picture probably does not sell books, at least not as well as lovely, artistic flower photos do, but that's what gardeners are interested in. Thanks for asking, and good luck with the book.

Do You Like Art Books? Do You Have or Display "Coffee Table" Book
Q

Outside, I enjoy those books too--- my late FIL went to school with Ferrol Sams and we love his novels. I hadn't realized he wrote essays as well. "When attending art shows, I swear off coffee table books but I am weak." We share that weakness, lol. Seems I am "always" never going to buy another huge book... Beagles, that room is fantastic, and I do see your pile of books peeking out from under that chair to the left :-) I'm with you on the kindle, but every now and then I like to hold a real book. Even though I find myself pushing the edge of the page instead of turning it (hanging head). No screen can reproduce the heft and color of those prints in large books, there is something about a good quality art print that is somehow more convincing than an image on a screen. Sloe gin, over the past decade or so I've seen many people putting lovely shelving in their dining rooms to combine functions or simply bring books into a room that doesn't often see them. I love that look, of a literary dining room! And your basket sounds eminently practical, we use our shagreen boxes and ceramic bowls for the same purpose--- the "stuff" has got to be corralled somehow. I have seen that Circus book, Robo, and the Atomic Ranch book also, they are both marvelous! It's clear that our collective enjoyment of these tomes is at least partly for the esthetic quality of the books themselves in addition to the content. I suppose that's what makes them "useful" decor :-) In some cases they might function purely as decor, as the leather books you've used, tinam. Have you seen the book purses that are so popular in some circles? Kate Spade has or had a few, and there's quite a cottage industry on Etsy making real old books into small handbags. They aren't a tenth big enough for me, but I love looking at them!

Lol.....after reading the first reader review for The Neighbor I have to say definitely it is not the book I'm searching for :0) My friend is an erudite woman and that would not be a book she'd have read !

I haven't read either, I was looking for one word titled books about toxic relationships and that's what popped up.

For years I had been looking for a book that I had enjoyed and gave away about a boy spending a summer in his aunts' home in Belgium just after WWII. Could not remember the title or the author for the life of me, just knew it was a memoir. And then I saw a book in a mail order catalogue and knew immediately that was the book I'd been looking for all these years. It was A House in Flanders. Such a simple title and I couldn't remember it.

Merry, I read Michael Jenkins' A House in Flanders several years ago . . . and may have recommend it here. Well worth reading with his descriptions of the Aunts, the way of life and the surroundings.

Although we think of Flanders as being in Belgium, in fact the 'house' was over the border in France. I was surprised that MJ was able to speak such good French, remembering what French lessons were like in England! I believe he went on to become a diplomat.

yoyo, sorry I can't help you with your title. Was the book set in the US?

I recognize the book from your description, Yoyo. I wish I could recall the title or author. All I remember now is that the author was a woman and the theme was a very toxic psychological relationship between two American female friends.

Not a woman next door exactly - but Notes From a Scandal by Zoe Heller springs to mind when I think about two women and a toxic relationship. Marvellous book!

I agree that Notes on a Scandal is a great read and the older woman (played in the film by Judi Dench) is quite evil, though I seem to remember that the nastiness was one-sided. But as you say the women knew each other as teachers and it was set in London not the US.

I'm very familiar with "Notes from a Scandal" but this book was set in America.

from Amazon BOOK :

A lonely schoolteacher reveals more than she intends when she records the story of her best friend's affair with a pupil in this sly, insightful novel Schoolteacher Barbara Covett has led a solitary existence; aside from her cat, Portia, she has few friends and no intimates. When Sheba Hart joins St. George's as the new art teacher,

I would say that this also takes place in London............
