Which counter stool do you like best with this unstained cherry?
Trying to decide on a stool for my new island. I’m pretty sure I want a saddle style stool in leather. Since it will primarily be my children sitting at the island, seats that can be wiped down are a must. Fabric would be filthy in no time. I also think I want a light grey seat that will compliment the countertop and I want the base to blend with the wood of the island which is an unstained cherry. Unfortunately that has been hard to find!
The island is not yet “dressed”, it’s just the boxes without the decorative side panels, legs and drawers yet. DH is building our cabinets and he wants to focus on getting all the back cabinets done before the weather gets cold and focus on finish work, but I do have this one panel in the cherry to use as a color guide. I did have a hard time down in his shop capturing its real color, the fluorescent lights are throwing it off, but it’s kind of a mid-tone warm brown. I found these stools and I think its my first choice right now, but its wood bases come in “espresso” which I’d call a dark cherry and “chestnut” I like the look of the espresso best, especially the silver nails, but maybe the chestnut would match a little better? What do you think? Here is a picture of them next to the panel. That is a picture of the same panel taken at different angles, neither really captures its true color, it’s neither that red or green, more of a general warm brown with both those colors in it and since its all unstained the colors will vary slightly between all the doors that will be on the back of the island.
Here is the island. As you can see the door to the backyard is right next to it so people have to pass behind the island to get out to the back, so I need stools that will tuck out of the way when not in use.
Also, do you find a 24” seat feels low? Our counter is a tad over 36”, 24” seems like my chest would be at counter height and the kids even lower, occasionally I’ve seen 26” stools but not many and not any in the color I’m looking for. Also, I’m going to get 3 of these and then I want to get a working stool for me, if you wanted to sit and work at a counter do you think a bar height stool would be better or just a regular counter height? I guess I don’t imagine using it a lot to actually work much, mainly if I wanted to lean and chat with my family while they ate at the island, if we were all eating we’d sit at the table.

In my home I have a granite island that has nothing breaking it up - no prep sink, cooktop, etc. In addition to using it for prep, it seats 4 and we eat 80% of our meals on it. It suits the kitchen and I love it. In our lakehouse I have a long island with a raised countertop (also soapstone). In that house, where we entertain a lot of overnight guests, I would not want the island to be a single level. When people come down for breakfast, for instance, they can sit at the island with their coffee or juice and chat with me while I prepare breakfast. The spaces are clearly defined, and I don't feel like they're right in my space while I'm cracking eggs and rolling out scones, etc. A tip I got here was to make sure the raised counter had ample enough width to comfortably fit a placemat & dish setting. Having the counter raised enhances the view from the 3-bay window and many casual meals are enjoyed sitting at the island watching the sun rise over the mountains. I would never want to change it out for a single counter-height island. I could offer many examples of why one style works better than the other in each of the houses, but they are subjective and have a lot to do with the flow of each place. Comments (46)went shopping again today to look at granite again- this is a granite i fell in love with when we first started looking around a month ago. Decided to go back to it and analyze it more... here's a pic from pinterest that gives a nice idea of how it will look. I think I am going away from the Cambria Canterbury and going back to granite which was our first thought. I think it just looks more rustic. :) Also wondering about a chiseled edge in the granite- I saw a pic and I LOVE it!! heard from the kitchen and granite people today that it is higher maintenance bc of the nature of it... anyone have experience with this? She was there for a study abraod to learn Spanish but got Swine Flu, Pneumonia and 106 fever. We flew down for a week while she was in the hospital, but they kept her for 2 more weeks. I hope this helps answer the mold question. When the mold enters your body, your immune system is compromised. I hae since had 4 sinus operations. My children and I no longer make IgA, IgM and some IgG subclass antibodies and get sick very easily. We now get infusions of IVIG every 3 weeks. If you have mold in your house, get rid of it NOW! The lifelong effects are not worth any amount of money and the infusions themselves run ~$4,000 per infusion (thank god for insurance). Anyway, the pictures have helped me narrow down my choices, the very dark granites wouldn't work because it would make the kitchen too dark (and I would never see the ants crawling). I like both granites from the first two pictures that Boxer pups posted, although my cabinets are more the color of the pic with the wine and glasses. I will have to check out the Kashmir White and other light whites and greens. What about the backsplash? Any suggestions? Also, any ideas about using onyx on one of the 5 bathrooms I need to get going on. Comments (35)Once I get a door sample, I will try it with the Torquay. There is a Cambria warehouse about 2 hours from here, so I can go look at slabs if I like the sample. I have to decide if I like the quartz as its own thing - I don't want to feel like I bought "fake marble." I do like the subtlety of the Torquay pattern in the pictures, but I really would like to get a little color in this kitchen, preferably some blue or green, and I don't know how to tie that in with the Torquay. The appliances are stainless steel. The porcelain floor tiles will be selected after the counters. I expect they will be a lighter shade in a very large format (i.e., 12x24, 24x24, 24x48 or something in that range). I am attaching a CAD of the layout. The island shape is something my designer friend was playing with. I expect the island will probably go back to being a 4'x8.5' rectangle, but the choice of slab may impact the choice of shape. There is a large amount of open wall space on the back wall around the range, so the choice of backsplash is very important. I feel like I need pattern in either the counters or BS - having both be solid colors just seems too stark to me. My original color plan was walnut cabinets, blue and white Namibia Sky counters, slightly iridescent white mosaic BS tiles, light blue paint on walls chosen to complement counters. Now that I am afraid of using the marble counters, I need a new plan. I saw a kitchen I liked on DIY that had a solid off white quartz counter and a mosaic backsplash that mixed green, SS and the off white of the counter. Of course, that kitchen had espresso cabinets with no visible grain pattern. I am worried about having a large BS with a pattern that competes with the walnut grain, which is why I thought it would be safer to go with a counter with movement and a solid color BS.
