I just found out about this book

I'm probably far behind but I just came across a book that was just released 9/3/19 by William Kent Krueger. This Tender Land is the title and it's not part of his Cork O'Connor series. I'm a fan of his writing and looking forward to this one. It sounds like a book that's right up my alley. Has anyone read this yet?

Skibby, Krueger's book Ordinary Grace is one of my very favorites, so I have been eagerly awaiting the release of his next non-Cork O'Connor book. This is the first I've heard, so thank you! I just put my name on the library wait list. I'm #26 in line for 7 copies. Before my number comes up though, I just might need to buy myself a copy and in doing so, provide a bit of financial support to an author I admire.

That is a stunning block. I'm fairly new to quilting and have only done a few PP blocks, but I really like it. Since I AM new and I like scraps, I don't mind oversizing my pieces by a long shot and then trim down the seam allowance after each seam, leaving me with scraps to add to my minimal collection! I've discovered my points and seams are much more precise! Salijo

Be sure it is colitis. How was it diganosed - with a biopsy? Inflammatory Bowel Disease includes a range of similar symptoms, but treated very differently. I was diagnosed for 2 years as Ulcerative Colitis but not responding to medication or any diet changes. I went for a second opinion at Cedars Sinai, they reviewed the UCLA doctor's notes, did a second colonscopy and biopsy and said the diagnosis was wrong - I had Chron's Disese. They switched my meds and within 4 weeks I was feeling better. 2 years later, I'm in total remission. No drastic changes to diet and no other changes needed in my life. 6-MP was the magic - that, and the correct diagnosis. Colitis/IBD can be a catchall diagnosis if they can't figure anything else out, or don't do the right testing. So if you don't respond to the first recommendations, I strongly urge you to seek a second opinion. The wrong diagnosis can lead to continuing symptoms and needless discomfort. One other thing your doctor should have checked is bacterial overgrowth, which 70% of patients with the IBD disorders have hand-in-hand with the bowel inflammation. You should have been tested for that as well. Treatment is a specific type of antibiotic and that usually does the trick.

It is supposed to be on Sunday and there are lots of petitions out there to stop it. They are still taking signatures and asking people to send emails to various officials. I am posting one of the signature links with a facebook page, but there are lots more out there if you google. It's not just the fact that they eat cats and dogs because obviously, Western cultures eat animals too. It's just the way these poor cats and dogs are viciously and brutally tormented and tortured to death that is absolutely unacceptable and beyond disgusting and has to be stopped. Even many Chinese are horrified by this brutality. Skibby, thanks to this thread, I found out about This Tender Land. I just finished it, along with a handful of Kleenex.

Krueger is a gifted writer. It's the story of four orphans who run away from a very oppressive and abusive school for Indian children in Minnesota in 1932. It's told by one of the four children, now in his 80s, about their summer odyssey, much of it harrowing, with moments and encounters of great beauty.

There were a few times when I wished the story would move along a bit faster but now I think it was worth the wait. It's a story about heart and becoming who you were meant to be. 4.5 solid stars. I'm not a book club person, but I think it might work for one.

I think my book club may be going to read it next year. We are in the midst of selecting the titles for 2020, so it is not set yet, but I know it is under consideration. I've obtained a copy, so one way or the other it is on my TBR pile.

I may have to duck the rotten tomatoes that might be thrown at me, but after finishing This Tender Land, I am very sorry to report that that I was sorely disappointed. I won't elaborate because I don't want to negatively influence those of you who loved it or are still looking forward to reading it. I wanted to like it. I even paid $20+ for it because I didn't want to wait in line at the library and I felt William Kent Krueger deserved some financial support after blessing us with Ordinary Grace. Alas!

I just finished this a couple of days ago and still thinking about it. I just loved it. Too bad it wasn't for you KathyT - how disappointing.

I'm glad you loved it Skibby (and you too, Bunny). I know lots of people must enjoy coming-of-age novels, but I usually don't. They seem full of one-dimensional characters and the young boy (usually a boy) can always outsmart evil adults. And major coincidences usually play a role. Or so it seems to me. I didn't expect Krueger to follow such an age-old formulaic literary tradition.
