Any reason not to use pulley seals in my double-hung windows?
Comments (7)Hi Kathy, My house was built in 1897. I am assuming the windows are the original windows. Next to the top sashes, I can see the pulley mechanism for all of the windows, except the ones that apparently now have tracks. Thanks for responding to my post. I took a look at all of my windows again and I see that I was confused about some things. :-) I realize now that the windows where I don't see the pulleys must have been fixed up like you said your dh did yours: the pulleys taken out and replaced with tracks. I got mixed up because our bedroom has four windows, and three of them have these tracks and one has the pulleys. I would have thought the previous owner would have replaced them 'en masse', which is why I assumed the tracks were some type of cover simply coverig up the pulley space at the top of the pulley. I did find a This Old House video about how to plug the hole where the rope meets pulley with a small strip of rubber carpet padding. At least I can stop the wind from blowing through it, and remove the piece when I want to open the window. :-) Here's a link to that video; the plugging part is at the end: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/video/0,,20051453,00.html Kathy, you wrote that your old windows have a piece of wood covering the pulleys. Does the wood run all the way from the top of the window to cover the pulley mechanism completely? Thanks! la_koala...See MoreIs the seal broken on these windows?
Comments (14)Andersen uses Cardinal's stainless spacer in all of their windows that are actually produced by Andersen. While the 100 series was initially introduced using a different IG system, the entire line was converted to Cardinal a year or two ago. However, the profile doesn't look right (to me) for a 100 series, and I have posted a 100 series casement handle for comparison to the last picture. Also, if it's an Andersen, it will have info logo'd on a corner of the glass. If there is no logo, it isn't Andersen. That spacer should be a warranty issue for somebody, but if there is no manufacturer info anywhere on the windows then you are out of luck unfortunately. Do you have any tempered glass windows in your home? It's possible that whomever made the windows also fabricated their own IG units and in that case they may have tempered their own glass. IF you have tempered glass in any of your windows, look at the tempered logo for "SGCC" with a four digit number after the letters. Get those four numbers and you can find out who tempered the glass - which MAY lead to the window manufacturer. Long shot, but who knows?...See MoreSealing out-of-square Windows
Comments (8)It will not cure 90% of your problem because if the house is "shifting" and causing your current windows to be out of square then the same will happen to your soundproof interior storms. If they are laminated glass and the house shifts they very well make crack. You need to fix the problem, hire a contractor who knows what they are doing and fix the current windows before you put storms on. You ordered the storms? Did you order them out of square to accommodate you out of square windows?...See MoreSeal on sliding patio door broken
Comments (5)millworkman -I seem to recall that the installer offered life time support should anything go wrong with the windows. Part of that was obviously product support and coordinating delivery etc. But also the guarantee wasn't valid unless they installed it. I feel that the installation should be sorted by the contractor - is that usually not the case? Also, another incident, the contractor refused to deliver us the correct window sash (for one of the 22 windows we ordered) which they incorrectly ordered and installed. We chased them but the response was that they no longer work with the manufacturer so we should just call them directly and get one from them. We PAID for the sash. They didn't deliver despite numerous reminders and requests. Where are we on that? Any advice? I feel let down because we thought very highly of the business owner....See Moretoddinmn
