Well, it looks like you have reading lamps covering that zone already, so I guess I'd start by asking what you want additional lights to do. Do you want ambient lighting that you can turn on with a wall switch? maybe a few recessed lights or a decorative central fixture would fill that need. Are you looking for up-lighting to set a mood? then maybe you can find some simpler sconces to do the job. etc.

Our room is quite dark so I'd like ambient lighting that I could turn on with a wall switch. These light fixtures are turned on by a light switch. I'm not very good at decorating so I wonder what wall sconces will look good on that wall?

Those are terrible. You can remove them and use large wall sconces over your tables in lieu of your table lamps, or just keep the table lamps and have a light fixture wired in the middle of the room if you need more light.

I don't think I'd add light on that wall -- I'd put it on the ceiling or on other walls in the room. If you're hiring an electrician anyway, it's not that much more to have them move it. However, if that is grasscloth on the wall, then repairing the current spots might be nontrivial. You might just leave those, since they're so slim, and add others where you prefer, on a second switch. I can't tell your style from just the photo given, but here are a few ideas:

If you don't want a central light, and don't want to do, say, recessed lights in the corners of the room, you might consider having four lights like this around the room, for a bit of zing:

I believe it's grasscloth on the wall. If i install something in the ceiling wouldn't the lights still look bad in the room? I like the flushmounts but I'm not sure if it'll be bright enough for our bedroom.

If you want to replace the lights with other high on the wall lights, consider putting any replacements in a cornice -- either aimed up at the ceiling for mood light or down for a reading light.

Have them changed or removed by a pro that can make sure any electric wires left in the wall will not create a fire hazard.

If you want to be rid of them, you could then either

just repair the drywall over any scars left after the removal as if they were never there or

because the line of lights and, therefore, any scars left from removing it are likely small, you could add a wall to wall floating bookshelf shelf to cover where they were for your books or hats or baskets of items you need to store

or, if the damage is more than a floating shelf might cover or if you need storage, you could create a wall to wall box shelf with a back to cover any holes left in the wall -- with the option to add a top hinge door for hidden storage.

or you could create something akin to "wainscoting" over that area of the wall to hide any scars.

If I didn't have the grasscloth on the wall I would have removed the terrible lighting when I moved in. I'm just afraid if I remove it it's hard to fix the hole in the grasscloth which is why I was asking what light fixtures would replace it.

I think this will be a project for next year's budget, along with the kitchen renovation.

There is no need for a ceiling fixture. Lamps produce less harsh lighting, provide better light for reading, and can add to the lovely look in a room. Add a couple to a wall switch so that you can turn them on as you enter the room.

Nothing will look right in the same location as the current lights. I would unfasten one and see what the grasscloth looks like underneath - it may be small enough to patch. Just don't use the lights until they are removed. The bedside lamps should be sufficient.

If you want to keep using the fixture for a while: LED bulbs run a lot cooler than incandescents or halogens. If you unscrew one of the current bulbs, you can take a photo with a ruler to show the size. Include a close up of any wattage labels. There are lots of odd little LED bulbs available online.

can I just tell you that those lights are $$$ picture lights. and if you have thought at all about hanging art over the bed, I would leave the one in the center, then just cap the other two off as they are really not in a good place for much else. Keep them and reuse them whatever you decide.
