owens corning or gaf elk architectural shingles?
Comments (2)I've installed quite a few squares of elk timberlines and what I like about them is, that compared to a three tab shingle, the elks have a better adhesion strip at the leading edge of the shingle that keeps them down in high winds. They are also heavier than three tabs. I cant speak for owens corning architectuals. I dont think you can go by mfgr's claims concerning longevity, in this case 30 years, as it is dependent on location and the weather extremes. The main concern is that you have a reputable installer that will do a competent install concerning underlayments, flashings, as well as the shingles themselves and will warrant their install in writing coinciding with the mfgr's warranty on the shingles....See Moregaf/elk or oc duration
Comments (2)I built for nearly 20 years; the WORST shingles I ever used, without any doubt, were GAF. I'd NEVER use them on my house. I certainly would go with OC. But I also know that ALL the manufacturers have purposely 'cheapened' their shingles over the past five years or so, because the warranties expressly cover the original owner, and since the vast majority move within 7 years, it invalidates it; hence, the shingles can carry whatever warranty they want, since there's rarely a payout. That being said; every single GAF roof we installed had major issues with the shingles from the very start; mismatched colors, horrible sizing (1" off per shingle in the same bundle), and just very, very thin. Owen's Corning are better, but I'd turn them all down for CertainTeed....See MoreHelp me with roof shingle color, please!
Comments (5)Thank you for your opinions. The photos are from the builder's website- their colors are the same as ours. We just recently moved in, but we had hail storm. So we will have to replace the whole roof! May i ask why you don't like GAF? In comparison to OC oakridge (not duration), GAF timberline is better choice, i thought....See Morecertainteed roofing
Comments (3)Certainteed, GAF, IKO, Owens Corning are all solid companies. Different lines within the brand may be better for certain applications however....See Moregirl_wonder
