re: a futon I think they can be iffy in terms of quality, or design. I've run into ones that aren't comfortable as a sofa (too low; too deep of a seat; something), and ones that are too hard for sleeping on. However, my dad has one that opens to a double bed, and it's actually OK for sleeping, and it's OK for sitting. So I would say don't get one unless you're going to be able to look around and find one that's well designed and comfortable, and spring for it. I know my mom looked long and hard for this one. It has drawers underneath, which is nice for storing the pillows, etc., when it's in bed form (which nowadays is never; we just leave it made up anymore, bcs the socializing is done in the living room, and the futon is in the den). But if he expects to have people sleep over, a futon is useful.

I don't think a sectional will work in your room, because the corner of the sectional will stick out into the pinch point area. And nobody really sits in the corner. I think the pinch point area should be left open to enter the conversation area. You will be better with 2 sofas, or with sofas and chairs. Consider removing some of the end tables and using coffee tables instead, or an ottoman with a tray for drinks. End tables take space that you could use for more seating. Not sure how many people you need to seat comfortably. I like ottomans. They are just as comfortable as a lounge section for stretching out, but have more flexibility when you need to seat extra people. And you can use them at different sitting places. I'd use one at the end seat nearest the fireplace.

You have to do what works for the way you live. Some comments would be: What happens if you have some people over-where would they sit? What’s the direction of the sun coming in the window-would it be in your face? Would it make you uncomfortable sitting on the sofa? It’s not a good idea to have your tv in front of a heating source. You have no room for ambient lighting. When you have so little space to start with and with having the living area at that end, it leaves you with so much wasted space. Just look at your plan now. I understand about the comment of carrying food to the table. I have a small round table in my kitchen, so I don’t have room for serving bowls. I plate everything in the kitchen and in my case, I am only carrying two plates to the table. So if it were me, I’d make the adjustment. And one last floor plan: create a “lounge” area by the window, if you got a round coffee that that adjusts in height to a dining table, you could eat there as well or it could be a hobby/craft or gaming table. Tv would be wall mounted over kitchen table and sofa opposite. And you may want to consider a graphic wallcovering for that huge blank wall. Enjoy your new place!

One thing that you could consider is the historic "Formal" furniture arrangement from the 18th and 19th century. This means exactly the opposite of what you would think. The formal furniture arrangement kept furniture like the dining room table closed and broken down into its parts and pushed to the wall unless it was going to be used for a large dinner. This is why so many tables were gateleg + flip up combinations. Maybe what would work best is some sort of gateleg table that could be kept folded down and either kept in the middle of the room or put to one side, and a decorative semi flush fixture you could walk under rather than a chandelier. My very small house has a room inside the front door that is shown as "dining room" on the plan, but really acts as an entry, since there is just one way into the house. It can't practically be set up as a formal dining room at all times, sometimes it has a bike or things like that in it. (We live right on the street in an urban environment and the bike would either need to be muscled down into the basement or carried through the living room into the enclosed yard. It can be set up as a dining area but usually the room is kept pretty empty with a gateleg against the wall and a few chairs, but it can be set up as a full dining room as needed. The rooms that some of these tables were used in were large enough to keep the tables set up, and some of these tables can be set up to be 30 or more feet long. But the idea is the same, they are usually broken down into components.
