Cabinets coming EARLY! Need help making some fast decisions...
Comments (4)Thanks amysrq and ellabee (Ella is my 7-year-old's name) for your advice. Countertops for the island are my biggest concern at the moment, since the island will also contain the sink and dishwasher, it will require plumbing, and I am trying to schedule all of the different jobs and keep things moving! The backsplash will likely be fairly simple with some subways, so I feel like I can postpone that for a little while. We have so many projects going on with the house and would like to have enough "finished" to move in the spring, so the sooner we can get this done, the better. And honestly, I have been thinking about all of this for so long that it is a relief to just make some decisions, just to be able to move forward! Resale is not too big of an issue, as our house is pretty "niche" to begin with. It is an old (ca. 1843) mansion with lots and lots of character (stained glass, elaborately carved wood, murals on some of the ceilings). The kitchen will be nice, but definitely not the main reason someone would be attracted to the house. Anyway, we are renovating it top to bottom, and as much time and money as it is going to take, you will have to drag my cold, dead body from it to get me to move again! Soapstone seems to fit the era, but i am worried about softness. I would probably be ok if I can find one of the varieties known to be a little harder. I love my Corian in our previous (well, actually current, as we have yet to sell it) kitchen, but I am looking at a darker color (soapstone-like), which I am afraid will not be good at all for showing scratches on a primary work space. Granite and quartz are out. Too hard and modern looking for my tastes and the feel of the house. I also really dislike cold countertops. Decisions, decisions... Thanks for your ideas!...See MoreNo Backsplash?
Comments (6)I'm sure I'm in the minority but I don't have a backsplash and don't want one. I didn't have one in my previous kitchen due to money issues. Once I recovered a bit from the remodel I no longer thought it was necessary and I liked the wall color all the way to the quartz countertop. I lived in that kitchen just about 24/7 for 5 years. On a rare occasion I had to lightly wipe a spot or two from the wall, but I had satin BM paint and it's very durable. I never had a single issue with pots banging into the wall and dinging it. But I never place my pots that far back on the countertop. In my current remodel I have the money for a backsplash but I'm choosing not to do it. I love the wall color coming right down to the countertop. I have a wilsonart top and they fabricator did an excellent job in measuring. It buts tightly with the wall and a bead of clear silicone finished it off. I dont' think they are absolutely necessary, but I do agree they can be very attractive....See MoreI have thought about it until my brain hurts....
Comments (4)I hear ya on the thinking about it until you head hurts! Your kitchen looks very warm and inviting...I like it a lot. But I do think changing out to some glass front cabinets would bring it up a notch...as would the open shelves, plate rack, etc you drew. I don't have a decortive hood...or one of those metal vent a hood things. What I have just looks like a thin black "line" along the bottom of the cabinets about the cooktop. To make it work, you just pull out the black trim and a piece of glass slide out and the fan turns on. The "guts" of the fan are actually up in the over head cabinets so you do loose some storage space - but not as much as replacing with a decorative hood and less expensive. Here is a pic, bear in mind that this is "before" pic but we are keeping the venting system. See the thin black trim above the cooktop? My current kitchen has similar colors as yours, but we do have quite a few glass front cabinets which I think makes a difference. We are keeping all this perimeter in the "update" part of the plan...just changing out the countertops, paint color and backsplash, Glass front...See MoreSecond thoughts about Crema Honed Marble Subway 3x6 Backsplash
Comments (10)Choosing a backsplash has been torture! I am trying to flow with the Mascarello granite & not compete with it. The colors are impossible. I think the Crema marble is elegant, but is it too light, or too plain or too hard to keep clean? Any advice would be appreciated? I change my mind every 5 minutes, day & night!
