pruning smoke bush into smoke tree
Comments (35)THANK YOU Brandon for an answer to the pruning question!!!! Will be sure to keep the cuts above ground level!! And to clarify what you and Ken are saying about a view to the utility boxes- ...actually, forget it... I just typed out a huge long explanation that I just deleted...lol ...in short (or @ least shortER) with the height of our deck and where our seating is located, the size of the smokebush, and my intentions (clearly understood at least in my own head- haha) don't worry guys, I'll be fine. I always envisioned a multi-stemmed tree, which would still hide the view of the utility boxes. ...don't think I will end up trying to do tree-form after all but do plan on pruning off many shoots and thin the boy down! as always, i appreciate the input from you all :)...See MoreSmoke Bush Question -Want Smoke

Comments (2)Not familiar enough with this one to be of much help. You could, obviously, give it a go and see what happens. Some bushes are poorer candidates for such treatment as you are aware. I think the shrubs that sucker vigorously and or tend to put out a basal trunks from the get go like dogwoods are typically in the poor candidate category. Good luck and if you try it, let us know how it works out!...See MoreIs the smoke bush healthy?
Comments (8)“Deer eating yew” most definitely - a deer favorite in my former garden, with all side branches eaten down to a few main stems whenever the poor things had the idea they might be able to grow a bit. After several yews of all side branches and needles getting eaten by deer year round, despite there being plenty of other food available, I put them out of their misery. I don’t think that khelm’s rabbit cage is a bad idea in the winter when critters are particularly hungry and for the first few seasons while it gets its roots established....See Moresah67 (zone 5b - NY)
