You want to add a bay I don’t think it makes sense and vaulting a ceiling is expensive for IMO really no gain of light this is anice space with lots ofwindows .

As a Pro, you know any architects in your circle? This is what they do.

This nook already has a peaked ceiling on the exterior, so it’s a matter of redoing the ceiling for the skylights. We’re talking about vaulting like five feet, not twenty.

@wilson853, those are beautiful pictures. Maybe I will try to find an architect that is south of Boston and will take on a small project.

The ceiling in our nook is raised from the location of the picture taker and slants down towards the back window. As you can see from the picture below, it isn't a huge slant, so we won't get that dramatic peak. It may drop 5 feet over the 10 foot span of the room.

That does not look like a difficult project. You could also reach out to the local architecture schools and possibly find an advanced student that can consult with you.

I wouldn’t touch it.

Not touching it isn’t an option unless we want to crank the lights at full blast all day long. The house is south facing and because of the surrounding trees, the family room and nook get very little sunlight throughout the day.

Skylights are going to be our only option without a major redesign. Opening up the windows in the nook was added to the plan because the contractor will already on-site and blocking off the nook to do work.

It sounds like the bay windows wouldn’t add much light, then. And they aren’t nicer looking. So do the skylights then. Or solatubes?

I would just add skylights.

What about more of a floor to ceiling window like the picture from @wilson853 above?

We’d like to open the room up more while we are at it. What is the opposition to a large bay window or more windows?

We may end going the architect route, but I still like to hear ideas because people usually mention something I didn’t think of.
