Do I want a notebook, an Ipad or another laptop
Comments (44)Yes, Google Chrome is a browser. No, you do not have to make it your default browser to use it. Just click on the icon for Chrome to open it, same as you do for IE. But you can have whichever one you want as your default and still use either one....See MoreLooking at mini notebook want your thoughts?
Comments (15)it truly is amazing how young they are learning to use this extremely valuable machine. I can only imagine where I would be if I had had the opportunity to have a computer at such a young age. How fortunate they are to have the world at their fingertips. Your grandson is a very lucky boy to have you around to get him his very own computer and he will love the apple, not as many infection worries there too, although more recently there have been some aimed at apple but not as many as for windows. I think that is one of the reasons so many of the small netbooks and the one pc per child versions have linux pre-installed on them, no infection worries and what a great head start to learn linux so young. Here I am in my gray hair days learning linux! It sure would have been easier when more of my brain cells were co-operating LOL but I figure I am better off exercising them than letting them laze around....See MoreNew HP ENVY TouchSmart Notebook questions
Comments (4)SO: my first question is, how do modern folks work without a dvd. So my first question is, do you need a DVD player? Only you can honestly answer that, we each use our computers differently, there being no real right or wrong way. I very rarely use mine. If you download anything from the internet it can simply be installed from the Downloads file. Thumb/flash drives are almost at give away prices for the larger versions now too. Do you have enough data to warrant an external drive or would the external drive be an extravagance in your case. I don't or won't put anything in the clouds, maybe just an odd quirk in my case but....... On the email situation why not create a couple of throw away space based accounts with Yahoo, Live, Hotmail, Gmail or who ever else takes your fancy? I still use POP3 with my MS Office program but have three throw away accounts for when dealing with anyone who is not family or friend because I do not want my main email account cluttered with spam....See MoreQuestion re laptops and high school
Comments (12)judie, maire cate, geogirl & work, Thanks so much for your helpful replies. I know I sound kind of dufus-ish asking this kind of question--I can hear it said in a creaky old voice "so gosh, what kind of contraptions are the young folks using these days?" : ) We're thinking of the laptop as being used for note-taking, primarily, rather than research like the school computers would be. Geogirl, your point about most kids still using regular notebooks is exactly what I was looking for. I do wonder what will happen if she's got nothing but pen and notebook, though -- I'm sure DD isn't the only one of her age to be better at typing than handwriting! When I hear her type I think how strange it was that I worked my way through college because of my typing speed--10 years of piano study didn't go to waste after all LOL...but today that ability is completely taken for granted. She could have asked her friend (who's a sophomore) a couple of weeks ago at camp, but she got shy and didn't (I think she's got a complete fear of coming across as a clueless homeschooler). Maybe this will be a good time for her to overcome her embarrassment and let her friend be her 'big sister' in a way...or maybe I'll call the office and ask myself. work, that's really interesting about not shopping for supplies until after school had started--makes sense. So all these 'back to school' sales where we used to get all our supplies (10 notebooks for $1 - ahhh...one of my favorite weeks of the year : )) are really jumping the gun for public schoolers, I guess? I know they had lists for elementary school kids, but I didn't remember whether there were some for h.s. kids too. This has all been incredibly helpful. Thanks again!...See Morekudzu9
