help pls: entry door w adj closet - swing out? dummy sidelite
Comments (18)Thanks Lyfia! All three ideas could work well. The closet wall currently would be between the two transom windows, so it wouldn't block either. Still, I especially like your idea of putting in a nice PAX closet, at least initially. A 59" (or 49") PAX closet, with a bench or plant in front of the left sidelite. I think that could work very well (if DH will be willing to be unconventional. I'm from Europe, so I'm quite used to wardrobes and no closets). I've been wanting to do a closet organizer anyway, so PAX could accomplish that. And, as you'd said, it means we could see what the space really feels like after we move in. This makes me wonder whether the entry door should be 2'8" rather than 3'0" wide. A smaller door might make the space feel larger ... and would leave more of the closet accessible. I'd assumed that 3' was more practical for bringing in fridges, couches, etc. But if 2'8" is a standard, then there must be other ways movers cope with massive furniture. Thanks! Very interesting ideas for me to sleep on. :-) (Yawn)....See MorePics Requested by.....brutuses....
Comments (19)Thank you, everyone, for all the compliments. It's extremely rewarding to be able to participate in something which is enjoyed by more than two people. To worthy, I've treated this whole house project as a hobby, kinda. Not only did we get to try our hand at designing a truly custom small house, but I (we) also did much of the work myself, including the plumbing. I hate bad plumbing, and there was only one way of making sure I wouldn't need to revisit that department in the future. I did the entire layout of the bathrooms and the kitchen. The tub surround 'box', and the intallation of the Jacuzzi, including the tile,.... took me forever,.....but I'm sure it will be there longer than 'forever'. The code sez that the Jacuzzi pump, and related plumbing, has to be readily accessable, and that's what led me to use a couple of cabinet doors that snap in, for allowing this quick access. The reason there is no shower enclosure is that my wife insists that it be of 1/2" 'frameless' glass. Needless to say, the quotes were quite high, and I'm still waiting for money to 'come in'. Meanwhile, we use the handheld shower head, and we get by OK. My wife 'soaks' in the tub a couple of times per week (therapy for her back, of course). Speaking of DW (the interior decorator), she finally found just the right settee for our small entry/foyer:...See MoreHow would you customize a small house ?
Comments (35)With recent experience living in 2 small homes, these are some things I would need if customizing a small home for my own needs: ~ bigger rooms but fewer rooms ~ 9 ft. ceilings (my current home built in 1910 has 9 ft. ceilings (I know that I don't need/want higher ceilings than 9 ft.) ~ bigger windows, but fewer windows - my previous home had only 8 windows in the entire house, but they were big and I felt we had plenty of light in that house. My present home has lots more windows and is not at all dark and dreary, but I think I can live with fewer windows if they are big. ~ while I might consider carpet in the bedrooms, I would still want hardwood floors in most of the other areas ~ a large walk-in pantry is essential for not only canned goods and food staples, but dog food, those large pots, paper goods, recyclables, and if there was room for the washer and dryer, all the better and I'd want this large pantry near the back entrance hall/mud room ~ a covered front entrance, but a good-sized screened in porch in a more private location ~ a kitchen with ample dining table space is fine, but I don't want the kitchen looking out into the living room space and I detest those kitchen "breakfast bars" that so many house plans show! ~ a walk-in closet in the master bedroom would be great - I've never had one ~ a carport would suit me just as well as a garage ~ even a small front entrance foyer is better than no foyer IMO and it would have a closet for coats, tote bags, brief cases, etc. ~ I don't want a huge master bathroom, but anything would be bigger than the 5'x5' space in this house. Guess that is my wish list for now!...See MoreWanted: suggestions for remodel of awkward front facade
