Adopting a pet

This recently adopted cutie was out with her human at a park where I was walking the dog.

The garden is a source of enjoyment for my community, but really, I'm about to put in herbs anyone can pick on the outer border. I've already got oregano going. I'm going to add sage, thyme, rosemary, and basil. This one is for the gold finches though. (it's a sunflower)

Socks, not only a sweet face, but a personality to match. Kitty, yes, that's her name, was on a leash at a very busy park and was as calm as could be.

While out walking on this jetty, I picked up what seemed like miles of discarded fishing line as well as some trash (mostly plastic bags and packaging) that was left behind. Honestly, how hard is it to carry out your trash and put it in nearby trash cans?

Part of my charity work consists of helping the elderly people in my neighborhood. I enjoy doing things for them to make their lives easier.

Dawn, that's so infuriating, isn't it? Hard to imagine anyone would deliberately spoil a beautiful natural spot, but they do. I occasionally pick up beer cans, soda cans, and empty chips bags at roadside. We've yet to see even one tofu wrapper. :-)

How some folks can get a Dollar's worth of charitable value for 60 - 50 cents.

In our area, many of the grocery stores have a box by the exit door for contributions to go to the Food Bank.

If you buy a dollar's worth of food, you choose what to buy, which might not be high priority for the Food Bank people, and you paid a Dollar..

A couple of times a year, several grocery stores let you give money at checkout to support a charity, so if you give them about 80 cents, the charity chooses what they need most and they get it wholesale ... and the store gets the credit for a charitable contribution.

If you visit the charity and give them the 80 cents, the same deal applies ... and you get that precious receipt, so if you're in 25% tax bracket, your after-tax cost goes down 20 cents to 60 cents, and if you're in a higher bracket, even lower.

Plus, in Canada, if you transfer stock or mutual funds to a charity, you get a receipt for the full amount ... and you avoid paying tax on the capital gain, which usually runs at regular tax rate on 50% of the gain. If you transfer a stock that cost you a bit over 4 Bucks, quite a few years ago, and now can be sold for over $100., the tax saving on that 50 bucks or so of taxable gain is substantial. (Dividends went from 10 - 12 cents to $5.76 per year - at low tax rate).

Most charities don't want to get a large amount, then pass most of it on to a dozen or so others, but the local Community Foundation or United Way have done so for me.

Yes it is, Alisande. I just don't understand it. So many times I'll see trash on the sidewalk, or worse because it's so awful to step in, gum and there is a trash can a foot away. But, trash on city streets isn't the unexpected sight it is in the lovely nature areas that so many like to enjoy, yet aren't willing to do their part to keep it lovely. The fishing line particularly irritates me because it's such a hazard to wildlife (like this guy posted below) and those who are fishing should know better. Shame on them.

OJ I absolutely refuse to give a store money towards a charity. THEY get the tax deduction, and it didn't cost them a cent. Loblaws, Walmart etc, they can support their own charities and I'll donate to the cause that I choose.

Speaking of trash why the heck do people pick up dog poo in the little plastic bag then leave it on the sidewalk??? I've seen that in my neighbourhood. Good grief, they already did the dirty part of the job.

I don't give money at grocery check-out: like I said - take it to the charity, get the receipt.

About the (other) "doggy bags", that's not too unusual, jassy .. a lot o' folk don't want their own dirt to follow 'em home, either!
