So I shouldn't prune or trim it for now? Just get it in new soil? worry about triming it in Spring? Maybe? Just making sure I understand. If you have the time tools and material available to re pot in a new soil why wait ? The old soil isn't doing your plant any favors it's probably getting more hydrophobic and compacting both would allow watering a harder task to handle when your plant is in an ideal growing and in need of watering. Some of us will re-pot plants in off times and in less than ideal growing conditions as an act of reassurance for our plants to have over all better growing health. I cant see the roots but if they where looking good in size and health chances are greater that I would split it up into two or three sized pots. Splitting up a plant while re-potting and pruning are different it's not my intentions to confuse you or other readers. If me I wouldn't prune right now Spring pruning is possible but for you to decide when spring gets here. You could prune it if you felt it needed pruning but chances are you might not have to prune it. Consider if you do prune in spring which is or isn't to soon wouldn't cause any major harm.

If you have a Circular saw and are good with it, no problem cutting straight free hand. Don't waste your time with guides. Will attach a picture of before and after. Safety first, set saw depth to not hit joists, make sure no wiring running below that could hit, wear knee pads, Sand so you have a good edge to follow, practice in an area not front and center. If you have a railing you won't be able to go all the way with circular saw, at which point either leave it or hand saw it. Very happy with how mine turned out. Not sure why these contractors are building decks like floors but it's not good. Water damage and no where for debris to go. Don't put up with it. Fix what they did wrong!

Amending more than small areas of a hostile-appearing soil is too much work and is not a suitable approach for growing long term plants like trees, shrubs and perennials. It's more natural to apply new material to the surface of the existing soil, either mulching and waiting until the existing soil is improved by that or making berms, mounds or raised beds with purchased soil, on top of the existing soil, and planting in those - without blending the two layers together. Amended soils are still the same soils after the amending - there is no such thing as building a soil - and will constantly be in a process of returning to their previous condition, unless amending continues indefinitely. Feasible for small rooted, frequently replaced plants like annual vegetables and flowering annuals - and not much else. It is also quite possible to quickly overdo additions of amendments and create adverse situations such as excessive drainage (from applications of sand for instance) or excesses of particular soil nutrients.
