first day at school
Comments (6)Hopefully, it will resolve itself soon, but in case it helps, here's what worked for me when DS was three. I would go and sit in the classroom. Just SIT. Not play with him or try to get him involved. Just SIT. I wouldn't carry on a conversation with him beyond 'yes' or 'no' answers, give only the quickest little cuddles -- then be BORING. I'd occasionally point out a toy or activity that I thought my son would like, but I made NO effort to go get it or get him involved in it. My goal was for my SON to get up and leave me because doing something else looked so much more fun than just sitting there with Mom. (I had told him in advance that I could stay for a little while, but not all day, so he knew I would leave and come back for him later.) Anyway, it took about 10 minutes for DS to get up and go get a toy and bring it back to me so I would play with him -- but I told him I had to go to work and couldn't play with him -- maybe someone else could? (No dice - smart kid!.) After about another 10 minutes, he finally got it and got up to play with some of the other kids. I sat there for a few more minutes to be sure he was truly involved, then gave him a quick wave on my way out the door. That was all it took!...See MoreFirst day of school today
Comments (8)As a retired elementary school secretary, I WELL remember the excitement (and work) involved with the first day of school. And every year, the same problem at the end of the day. Kids who had been driven to school that morning for the first day didn't know where to find "their" bus to take home. On the first day, our bus drivers would have a colored construction paper circle in their front window and would give each rider a "ticket" to match to the correct bus. The circle in the window was only used for about a week but helped the new riders a lot. After that, they all knew their bus number and the bus' position in line. We always urged parents to let their kids ride the bus the first day even if they wanted to follow the bus to school and walk their child to their classroom....See MoreFirst day of school, did you?
Comments (16)Yes, I had new clothes for the start of school every year. Some were hand-me-downs from the girl next door, who was three years older. I was just thinking the other day that Marilyn's clothes would suit me better today because my hair color is more red-brown now. She had brown hair and eyes. I was 'black and blue'. I remember trying on dresses that my mother had brought home as she decided which ones to keep and which to return to the store. Until she decided, they were all 'property of Marshall Field's'. That certainly sounded odd. I'll always remember my first day at Kindergarten because within the first minute in the door a classmate punched me in the stomach. I was staring at him, and he didn't like it. I'd never seen a Japanese boy before! WWII had recently ended, and I expect he had suffered because of his race. (His mother was mortified!) A dozen years later Mike and I graduated from HS together....See MoreAdvice for the First Day (Week?) of School
Comments (18)When my kids were in school the only "chaos" was transporting them at different times and often to different schools. In preschool it was mornings for one and afternoons for the other. In high school it was two different high schools. I literally pushed my kids into getting their drivers licenses early so I could get a break. Other than that I don't see much difference. Parenting is parenting and school doesn't change that. Elementary school was easy because everyone went to the neighborhood school and our block carpooled. Ah those easy days when kids didn't have to be in car seats until five or 6 and booster until 11 or even 12 in some cases. I don't know how parents do it these days. It must take a whole convoy of cars to transport a brownie troop. Grand daughter is going to kindergarten this year. DD has been taking her by the school about once a month since the end of last school year. Last week she wanted to show her other grandma her new school. She led her all over the place pointing out the office, the library, the auditorium/cafeteria the big kids wing and playground (she's mad she has to stay in the "baby" one) and the K classroom area. She'll only be there for 3 hours but she knows more about the campus than I did in the 2nd or 3rd grade. She happened to see that the K rooms had people in them and ran up and knocked on the door. She'd only met 2 out of 4 of her possible teachers. She knocked and when the door opened she introduced herself as a new student and told the teacher who answered she wanted to let her know who she was in case she ended up in her class. LOL We grandmas and mom are having a long beach day the day before school starts. Daddy may join us after work. We will have dinner there. Kids will be tuckered out by the time we get home. Maybe passed out in their car seats. May not even get a bath much less be laying out clothes. She'll wear what she wants, just as shes been doing for the last 2.5 years....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
