Comments (4)i am on this forum trying to answer this very question, I have evergreen bushes in front of my house and lots of butterfly bushes in the back, this year the hummers are ignoring the butterfly bushes and choosing to search the tip of the evergreens out front....I am totally baffled by this behavior, the only thing i can figure is maybe they are searching for insects.....I have never seen such a thing, they are out there everyday since they have arrived....weird.....See MoreHummingbirds all year. Worried about the unusual cold weather Van B C
Comments (5)Hello Morz8, Boy its been cold. Lived in the greater Vancouver all my life and don't remember it being this cold for this long. Today finally warming up. Been doing the same setting my alarm before dawn. I leave one feeder out all night wrapped with a tensor bandage under the porch light. Never did totally freeze. The other three feeders I bring in at night and place out before dawn. Two at the front of the house as the female at the back of the house won't let any of the others even have a little sip. So all are happy as she can't guard all four feeders. Just out of curiousity are you buying your syrup or making your own? Nice to know other people are looking after sweet little guys during this horrible cold snap. I know your close by. Isn't it nice we are warming up. Best Regards, Lynn Hello Gardengal48, Thank you for this valuable information. I had read on the internet that the hummingbirds would perish in this cold weather if they didn't get their nector. I didn't realize how tough they really are. Best Regards, Lynn Thought she perished but she's back....See MoreHave you seen any hummingbird/sphinx moths in your garden this year?
Comments (21)The hornworms start the season munching on evergreen yaupon holly, to which they are welcome. They are not welcome to my tomato plants, so I transfer them to ornamental nightshades that contain more of the toxin they crave. In high summer the adults drink nectar from crinums, datura, hymenocallis, giant moonflower and, during a bloom cycle, Cestrum nocturnum. It won't be long before they hover over butterfly ginger. It's pure joy to watch them....See Morepopmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
