My fruit in pots does overset and the fruit is smaller no matter what I do. But it is sometimes better, sweeter, firmer, hangs longer and is more flavorful. AS you say more thinning will help some. I thin and thin and thin somemore, and still end up with too much fruit. So I doubt you need a pollinator for the plum or cherry. I've budded a lot of varieties onto potted trees but your at least as well off just planting two or more trees in one pot or using smaller pots and having more of them. Even a light weight mix gets heavy in a 15 gal pot. Ten to 12 gallons works and are more my size on moving day. I always seem to be moving in winter. Blueberries work in 5 gal pots. Just get another pot if you need a pollinator. I'm not going above this size from now on. You can get 2-3 lbs off a 5 gal pot maybe more. Mine in 5 gal pots after 10 months increased from 10 inches tall to 3-5 ft and are covered with bloom. I'll harvest a couple lbs from some at one year age. Pots are a great way to go for tight spaces. But you do need sun. Covering the ground with a reflective fabric like Extenday is a proven way to increase yield and quality esp with pots. I've used it in my greenhouse six years.

I was reading about muscadines and found a reference to Jaboticaba. At first I did a double-take, because the webpage was describing what muscadines tasted like and said they tasted more like a Jaboticaba fruit than a regular grape. I looked further and realized the website was for Austrailian gardeners. Then I thought, "What is a Jaboticaba?" and searched for the word. The first thing I saw was a picture that showed the fruit stuck to the trunk of the tree rather than on the tips of the branches, which really peaked my interest. After reading about the Jaboticaba on wikipedia, I immediately went to google shopping, because I had to have one if at all possible. I found an Amazon merchant, Hirt's Gardens, that had them for $15, so I ordered it. The tree is small but darling. Since I live in Zone 7, I may never get it to bear fruit, but it will make a great looking houseplant during the winter for years to come. It can provide company for my ficus tree that I've had for 30 years. The place where I ordered it, sells them for Bonsai growers. It would make a great Bonsai because it has tiny leaves the size of my fingernail. From what I've read, they grow very slowly and make great Bonsai specimens. I'm planning to let it grow as fast as I an get it to grow by keeping it outdoors until frost and then bring it indoors for the winter. My tree from Amazon/Hirt's Gardens is a small leaf variety of Myrciaria Cauliflora. It's funny that the Latin name is "Cauliflora", because when they bear fruit, they remind me of Brussels Sprouts. The one I got is actually prettier than the picture they have online. It is about 9 inches tall and really bushy. They had it pruned to look like a little oak tree or something. How much has yours grown in the past year? I got mine about 2 weeks ago, and it has already put on a new set of leaves over most of the top. It has about 2 inches of fresh new growth this season. Actually, I checked and found that I grew them in 2007. Then my home saved seed flopped in 2008 & 2009. Here's the recipe which I received from Sandhill Preservation Center: Garden Huckleberries Place 8 cups of berries in a non-aluminum one gallon size pan and add enough water to not quite cover the fruit. As they begin to boil add a total of 1/3 cup of baking soda (a little at a time) and stir continuously. As you add baking soda, green foam will appear. After adding the baking soda, cook for 10 minutes at a low boil. The mixture will continue to foam quite a bit as the berries are cooking. After they have cooked for 10 minutes, drain this solution off and rinse with clean water. The berries will still be somewhat hard. Next return the pan of berries to the stove, add 1/3 cup water and ý cup of lemon juice. Watch with amazement as the mixture changes from emerald green to a royal purple color. Cook an additional 35 minutes until the berries are tender and then add 2 þ cups of sugar, 1 ý tablespoons lemon extract, ý teaspoon salt and ý cup of tapioca. Pour the above mixture into two 8 inch unbaked pie shells, the add a top crust or lattice and bake as you would a blueberry pie. You can also eat the sauce or use it as an ice cream topping.

You misunderstood me. I'm not being cavalier at all and I have done my research. I only comment on blueberries growing in areas I'm very familiar with so as not to raise the expectations of the OP. I would never tell anyone to just" throw it in a bucket" and be done. I didnt elaborate on my technique before because I wanted to encourage to try, not discourage because its looks like too much trouble. The OP or anyone could PM if they want to and need more help or support while growing. I provided pix of the plants and their fruit as "proof" of my technique. I love blueberries, want to eat every day so I may be a bit more enthusiastic about growing than most and want others to join in the fun. I know Ohio and its winters well since I have family there and help them with their fruit trees all the time. I know there were a lot of deer and rabbits in Ohio last winter that stripped my cousins fruit and ate branches and bark, so its probably why they want containerized to keep near the house and protected. Blood, sweat and tears have gone into my containerizing since NYC dirt is bad and space limited. Yes, I'd love to have an orchard like my cousin in Ohio and thanks to containers I do. In ground I have grapes, pears, plums and peaches, but I love the flexibility of my miniature/dwarf cherry, apples and berries in containers to expand my food supply, all of which live outside year round not garage kept. There is a lot you can grow in containers and with new crosses and hybrids whether by nature or man happening all the time. We shouldn't limit ourselves to the "you cant grow that here or in that way" ideas anymore. Of course I did research for years before I even tried blueberries in the ground. 3 years in amended ph tested soil and they still died no matter what I did. No matter what you read in a book, a plant is alive and has a mind of its own. The northern lowbush and highbush I bought had difficulty in summer sun, heat and humidity which is not in the books, but they have since acclimated. I didn't expect to coddle them by putting umbrellas over their tops when it was too hot and then run back out getting soaking wet just to lower so the berries would get their rain. Mulch, frost blankets, bagged leaves, moving blankets, lights, unheated patio (depending on variety) I did it all the first 2 years of the blueberries, even in my bedroom for struggling whips and rooting twigs with humidifier mist. I admit I went overboard, but now I've learned. I custom mix the media I place them in and spare no expense in the initial planting which contributes to a strong root system. After that initial coddling, they have been so well acclimated that when I was hospitalized in Fall and could not care for them and were left with just bark mulch, the -20 wind chill and 8-13in of snow and more with drifts, did nothing to them and I got boatloads of berries the next season. I didnt want to, I HAD to leave them alone unprotected in the cold, snow, ice and 50mph winds and nothing happened, these babies are stronger than you think. For the future, I do want to provide a windbreak or frost blanket beyond the mulch but if something interferes, I'm not worried because in all this time I learned drainage is the key. Besides, the Brazelberry line is meant to be containerized all its life. I started mine way before they "invented/patented" them and it probably would have saved me a lot of trouble and time, but I'm happy with my struggles and what I learned from failures before successes. If my trial and error can help someone grow what they want or save time/money then I offer my assistance and I'm more than happy to discuss, and I only comment after I have replicated my growing by helping my friends duplicate my methods and results. As for size regular or dwarf, choose a blueberry by its natural height on how it will look in your landscape in all seasons and can you easily pick the fruit. There are 2 varieties I would love to have but at the higher end of 6ft and add the pot I'm not getting on a ladder to pick the fruit. OP if you havent started yet, I may have a local source for you.
