Fireplace Transformation !!
Comments (12)The ceilings are 9' but look only 8' because of the room length. I have been trying to talk DH into letting me paint the ceiling(our have it painted :)) a lighter shade of the wall color. This would make the ceiling seem higher. I also want to repaint the living room ceiling the same shade (to make it look higher) and the dining room dome the same because I think the green (from the walls) is too dark in the dome. Perhaps I can do all that when the fireplace is re-done. In this photo, you can see my dinging room ceiling, and a smidgen of the living room ceiling in the background (past the foyer.) Living room ceiling I am so sorry.... I realized that I have gotten off track from the original posting and practically taken over this thread. I guess your re-do has inspired me. :)...See MoreOur split-foyer face lift: ?s on dormer, portico and lights Xpost
Comments (23)Thank you lizbeth and k9arlene for your thoughts. @lizbeth: I appreciate your kind words on the house. Thanks for your vote on the railings, and for helping me once again on my home. I see that the darker stair railings do draw your eye to the door more. DH has mocked it up as a brown to match the door. In real life, we won't likely get a brown that matches the door as well as the mock-up shows. The metal railings only come in so many colours. The door is a stained door, and the man door is painted metal. We can paint the man door brown, but it won't look the same as the main door. I will ask DH to mock-up the darker door to see. As per having the picket railings on both sides of the steps, I don't believe there is a safety issue (please let me know if I am missing the safety concerns). There is a full wall on the left side (left as you up steps) so the pickets are not needed for safety. However, they may look better if the two sides are symmetrical. @k9arlene: Thanks for your question. If we did a different kind of deck railing it would block the gable window and gable door. The glass railings, while not allowing privacy as you stated, prevent the house behind from being screened. Our build has been long. At one point, we had a gable roof on the garage (not the flat roof that we have now). Sadly, we had to tear down the newly framed gable roof as it blocked the window/door behind and did not look right (too tall of a garage in your face). Comments (14)Update on the transformer and dimmer issue. The retailer sent a 60 Watt transformer to test with an ELV dimmer instead of the magnetic one. It's tiny, smaller than the dimmer and much cheaper, like $65 instead of $200 for the 150 Watt transformers. We got the package via UPS on Monday (not Next Day Air when sent on a Friday) and the lights worked fine but the dimmer did not work. The transformer was installed in a wall space near the ceiling. Today they disconnected the transformer and installed it all a different way, with the transformer installed behind the dimmer/electric box. It all seems to work with the exception of one bulb that won't fully dim. I'm just glad we have lights finally. They will install the kitchen lights once the additional 3 transformers arrive, which should be tomorrow....See MoreYour advice welcome! Foyer lighting.
Comments (20)Brianne; You have a fabulous entry to light & transform your home. I see many great options here for the hanging fixture. I also see the sconces as equally important. I would not match the chandelier exactly & would treat them separately. I also notice that on the second floor landing that you would need a fixture to finish off the transformation. The side table when finished would offer you another warm & decorative option. I see that you are getting many ideas here. It is always a function of what your taste & my expertise is to offer & guide you. I do not want to compete on a open forum. I work extremely we well remotely & have 40 years of lighting design experience. My website is www.lightvisionconceots.com & email is craig@lightvisionconcepts.com. I would would need a commitment from you to provide my services. Thank you!! Craig Barre...See MoreAWINMH
