Tomatoes in pots - how do you keep them from blowing over?
Comments (3)I would suggest what we did up in Yreka and Weed, where the wind whistles down the valley...put the containers up within 'railings' of tightly-strung thin rope and clip the pot or cage to both ropes. Presto, pots stay up. Without a cage, though, I don't guarantee the plants will! Hope that helps!...See MoreDo you let them clump up, or keep them trimmed out to 1 or 2 pups
Comments (13)At the risk of letting on that I am an addict AND a thread hijacker...I have a related question... BananasDotOrg, you mentioned that on a plantation, they cut down the pups and leave them so that only the desired pseudostems will produce. When I have cut large pups, they just keep growing. I thought I read here about pouring kerosene into the cut to get that particular pseudostem to stop growing. (too strange to have imagined, right?) I wonder about keeping production up when I have so many pups. Ultimately, I also want to move this particular mat as it is blocking too much sun for my veggies. So I am transplanting pups when I can, but I need to get some of very large pseudostems under control. Can I use kerosene?...See MorePotholders? What kind? Where do you keep them?
Comments (20)Thanks for the responses and ideas. I guess I'd better go to BB&B and check out some of the options. Those silicon pot holders and the leather/suede ones look interesting and promising. I do have mitts, but unless I'm wrestling with a turkey or something big in the oven, I usually don't like to take the time to put on mitts just to move a pot off the stove, or take a hot dish from the microwave. I guess I'm concerned about my ugly ones, because the habit is also to throw one down on the counter or table and also use the potholder as a trivet, too. While I do have proper trivets, for just the quick meals around the house, it seems like an necessary bother. I did pick up some interesting magnetic trivets at IKEA recently, which seem like a good idea. Since I have induction, they will stick to bottom of all my pans. However, they are only trivets as they are too stiff to use as a potholder. I also like the idea of having a container out that can be used to hold them. Any other ideas? Pictures? Comments (5)there is a reason all hosta garden tours are in late may and june .... and thats because they start looking ratty when the heat of july hits .... and the level of heat is location dependent .... what can i say about rats with cottontails .... you know how to fix that ... wabbit stew.. lol ... holes.. slugs usually ... its a year around job.. and it starts now.. with full fall cleanup and perhaps a vinegar or ammonia drench around the crown ... and then spraying religiously all season long .... browning ... usually water related.. or more specifically.. lack of water ... probably starting in late june ... they are impossible to kill ... [unless you pay a hundred bucks for one.. then it will commit suicide on the way home from the nursery.. lol ].... and that is often summed up by saying you can throw them on the driveway ... if you wish to teach them a lesson ... but being easy [???] ... still comes with needing to take care of them.. on some level ... ken ps: anyone else disturbed that your hosta are easy .... ???? ... if you get my drift.. wink.. wink.. or if you prefer ... ;) .... ;)...See More- 7 years ago
