Bungalow exterior is finished!
Comments (55)Thanks, everybody! Texasgal47, I hired a landscape architect to design paths, patio, and plantings. I'm good at colors and interiors, but I have *no* gardening sense and, as a design matter, have no ability to think in the 4th dimension: TIME! I can't picture what plants will look like in combination with each other through the seasons and in years to come. I originally hired a landscape architect, as opposed to just a landscaper, because even though the yard is small and looks pretty much flat, we needed to do some complicated things with drainage and levels and I wanted to be sure none of the needed excavating was going to make the 1922 garage fall down. The whole thing is now a miracle of perfect drainage, with water from uphill going through new drains and sheeting across the walks and patio and all going to a new rain garden hidden among the dogwoods. I am, indeed, a very happy camper - and a broke one - but I'm feeling much better than before about the integrity of the envelope of the house, between proper preparation and extensive caulking by the painters and the clever drainage solutions by Ryan the landscape architect....See MoreHow to update a small bungalow exterior.
Comments (8)I think it would look great to clad the stucco in dark gray or dark blue siding and leave the stone as-is. If you want to paint the stucco, I think you need more of a contrast between the stucco and the stone. Right now it looks very flat. What other colors are used in your neighborhood? Agree that the roof needs an inspection and repair. Your bungalow has a lot of character- if you have extra budget for the exterior (now or in the future) I would consider an adorable path (instead of the sidewalk), some larger plantings in the front bed, and updated fixtures on the porch (can’t see what’s there now but presume it could use a refresh). What a great project- I hope you post the final result!...See More1940s bungalow: please help me pick exterior colors ;)
Comments (16)Thanks everyone for the great tips. I'll drop the red trim idea. FWIW, here's an old picture before we repainted (pardon the car in the front, we'd just bought a Prius. Matches the trim of the house, lol). FWIW, I hated that bright red trim, though at Xmas the door looked pretty with a wreath. Brown Dog thanks for all the tips. (on the mock up, I ran out of time. I actually am supposed to be doing something else right now, now getting sucked into Houzz! ;) Thanks for the point of all the design elements fitting together. That's good advice. BTW, yes my gardening style is "controlled chaos." In that shot, the sweet peas were running a muck. ;) Another question: I am keeping these original windows but in the back, adding Marvin Ultimate (wood interior, alum exterior). The windows will be trimmed out to match the front. What color should I choose for the aluminum cladding in back/ I'm considering Coconut Cream, but there is Stone White or another ivory, Sierra White. thanks! https://www.marvin.com/our-products/options/exterior-finishes...See More50's bungalow with 70's 2 story addition - exterior design help wanted
Comments (3)I actually like the arch and brick detail, although I do understand houssaon’s POV and it’s good to see different possibilities. I think I would keep the brick arch and restore as much brick as possible and maybe bring in a bit of wood detail, also. Is you would like to see how different ideas could work on your house, I recommend this company. https://www.houzz.com/pro/uoflcardfan77/creative-visual-concepts-kevin-strader...See More- 4 years ago
