This rose (said to be a fairly early Hybrid Tea) does not do this automatically. It is a way of pruning (whether on purpose or accidentally) which results in this form on a mature rose. Nothing to do with the actual rose, other than that it works better on some kinds than others (see link).

I have what was a "one cane wonder" of a plant of Susan Louise (hybrid tea - seedling of the hybrid gigantica Belle Portugaise). It had one bare 2 inch in diameter cane, and then what looked like a happy rose bush sitting 4 feet off the ground, on this one cane. The main cane is tilted at about a 45 degree angle (we had to support it so it would not fall over). We cut down a huge tree near it, and one year later, with more light, it has put out two large strong new canes (not from the actual bottom of the cane - one is about 6 inches up, and the other one is about 18 inches up ). To my delight, they are both on the opposite side to the one the main cane is tilting towards. When they grow and bush out, I am hoping they will balance the weight of the entire bush. Roses are amazing.

In order for a rose to achieve this sort of growth, it has to grow to a good age. Most modern Hybrid teas do not do that. However, the some of the older ones do. My Susan Louise is a HT, but it hybridized itself, and one of its parents is MUCH closer to a wild rose (one of its grandparents was wild). I have a guess that this is what gives it the necessary longevity to grow to this size.

Thanks Jackie for the link.... I had not seen that post....guess it was before I found this site. It was an interesting read.... Did not realize that it was a way of trimming the bush. I had NEVER see limbs that large on any rose, so I thought it was a tree of some kind. But I knew it wasn't a standard rose, which I think people call "tree roses" but they certainly do not fit the same category....

If anybody has done this practice of trimming their roses to look like these trees, I invite them to post their pictures and to list what kind of rose they have. It would be interesting to see what roses have done this, where they are located, and how long it took them to get the rose to look like these. I just think they are kind of neat and would enjoy seeing pictures of what your "tree type roses (not standards)" look like.... don't know that I would actually trim a bush to do this.... though I do get a few one cane wonders....

There honestly is a danger to growing a rose like that. WHEN, not "if", but WHEN something happens to that huge, thick trunk, the plant may not have enough "oomph" to push out new basals to keep itself going and you may just lose it. That's the real down side of the "one cane wonders".

Oh, "Durst Plot" is 'Sutter's Gold'. An appropriate rose for that family, and probably planted there not all that long after its 1950 introduction.

This is the same cemetery where we found "George Washington Richardson" now identified as a match for 'Mlle. de Sombreuil'.

I have speculated that the 'Sutter's Gold' might have been the climber . . . but I don't know for sure. But as to the tree-like habit, we have seen any number of very old Tea Roses that have grown to be trees. And, of course, a few other modern HTs.

I used to hope that seeing such things would convince people that, in the right conditions, these roses can grow to be huge -- and to NOT all need harsh pruning. So far, not much luck.

Oh, Adam those are lovely pics and I was thinking Adam is going for those pots next...lol.

I was looking for a pic that I took at Dr. Malcolm's in 2018 in a background. I did not have a close look but it was as tall as a tree and this year it was gone. I know it was a David Austin ( TG, I believe ) Bec Dr. Malcolm point one way up but I did not pay much attention how it was grown since I got side track so quickly .
Roses comes and goes and the garden changes with a little design so I was told by the senior kids.

I also love the idea of a tree or even a weeping rose . They have this unique looks to it.

Jeri, am I right in thinking some of those lovely rose survivors in old cemeteries may have acquired their single trunk form more or less accidentally, as a result of years of being bashed around by unskilled maintenance workers' mowing and pruning efforts, regularly mowing or hacking off basals for example, in an effort to keep the plant 'neat' and more resembling some vague idea of how a Hybrid Tea/ modern rose ought to look?

Comtesse -- You are absolutely correct. And I've seen it happen. For one thing, they don't "get" basal canes on old, old roses. They think they are suckers, and weed-whack them. GRRRR . . . We got that stopped, at one old cemetery, and in doing so, saved a very old Tea, which would otherwise have been lost.
It's hard to tell, here, but 'Sally Holmes' grew like a 12-ft-tall tree, here, with a broad canopy. We had started it up a wooden tuteur, and it eventually became self-supporting.

I am so enjoying the pictures..... With the amount of wind I get and the amount of limbs that break on my regular roses, I don't think I would or should do the one trunk trees.... but oh how I admire them.... just so beautiful.
