Design Dilemma Home Repair Exterior

Colour suggestions for exterior of home?

A kindly thanks in advance to anyone who has advice for us. We recently purchased this 1903 home that still has original wood siding on the back - it is in very bad shape and needs to be replaced. We had originally planned to replace only this 'triangle' on the rear of the home and same on the front, which would leave the dark brown bits as-is. If we replace absolutely everything, brown bits included, the cost of the project doubles (we have other work that needs to get done so not sure how we feel about that at present). Questions: (1) what would you recommend insofar as colour if we replace the siding only, leaving the brown bits visible, and (2) what would you suggest if we replace everything?

Could you not just paint the brown bits the same color as the new siding.

Unfortunately the upper soffits + fascia are not easy to access at the back or front of the house. We would need to hire a painter that can put up scaffolding around the house , which also gets expensive.

Very cute house. Wrong style of windows for shutters. I agree with jck910 and deco's suggestions. Be sure to paint your downspouts the same color as the siding. you could purchase windows for the one panel in that garage door. they are easily removed. I'd look into that. They also make a wood-look paint for garage doors. That might be worth a shot too. (lots of online tutorials for it) Accessories and landscaping are what's going to really make this exterior what you want. a new door is easy enough to find. heck, I just found a bunch of them on Craigslist. people selling vintage wood mcm style doors. or just get a 4 glass panel door in it's raw state. you can refinish it, or paint it yourself. get some modern numbers, spray them if needed, attach them to a nice piece of finished wood and make your own placque get some decent looking exterior lightes. spruce up the front porch area and flower beds. Look at modern style front yards and see what you can replicate w/yours. (and yes, if you can swing, get rid of that box! )

I would not worry about the color of the addition. You don't have to match it. If this is the original siding, be prepared once the comes off, for some unpleasant surprises. Another reason the focus just on that area,

I have seen a few buildings in my town with the same color brick paint the wood sections a tan. It looks far better than the usual white. Also tan would also look good with the new white windows

But you HAVE to focus on the trim, fascia and siding of the upper part of the main building. Rotting wood lets in rain water, invites insects and rodents.

I would be concerned that the new window in the attic is properly flashed after the new siding is installed. Is cement fiber board used in your area? Siding and trim can be ordered pre-primed.
