What type of paint for my new kitchen cabinets?

Hi, I am at the point where I am picking the finishes for my new kitchen and could use a little help.

We are having custom cabinets built and the designer brought me a sample door. It was nice, but I felt like the paint was not rich enough looking (although this might be all in my imagination). It is a shaker style door painted a Sherwin Williams taupe at 8% sheen. The cabinet maker copied the color from a Farrow and Ball paint chip of Mouse Back (darkish taupe) that I gave him.

My question is if anyone can tell me what sheen or type of paint might be used to get the Christopher Peacock cabinet paint effect? I know he has his own line of paint and also uses Fine Paints of Europe but these brands may be beyond our Amish cabinet maker's wheel house. I have not seen a CP kitchen in recent history so I'm a little in the dark but I would like the best most luxurious looking finish on my cabinets as possible. I think my guy uses SW most of the time--if necessary I could probably get him to use BM. But enamel, or water base or ?? What gives the most luxurious finish?

If your are talking about the newer. CP look he's doing mostly high gloss now. It IS "Fine paints of Europe" even the ones with his name on it. It is oil based hand brushed finish using a particular technique. His older style was same but using their satin sheen.

I would let your cabinet maker make all the cabinets and drawers etc. Get the doors and drawer fronts from Walzcraft with the Walzcraft finishing program you desire. this is a good approach and allows the maker to do his craft with construction and you can specify your particulars on the finish : Walzcraft handles finishing and doors /door fronts across the industry. Not sure what "luxury " finish means ….but if you have a color/etc you can submit to them , they will help you achieve it.

Hi. I used the ECO on my kitchen cabinets and it's a beautiful, durable finish. I could not be happier with it. It has had to survive an additional six months of heavy remodeling all around them and they still look like the day I finished painting them (after much dusting of course). I'm not sure if Sharon in FLA is still around, but she used this stuff too and was delighted. You don't need to poly anything after using this paint. It is extremely durable all on its own. I used it on the exteriors of all our windows and the exterior of our front door as well, due to the durability factor. I don't have pictures at the moment, but hope to post some very soon. Let me see if I happen to already have some pics online of when I first painted them..... Wow. I can't believe it, but I don't. No wonder people are on me about pics. Sheesh! Ivette

DH and I are finishing up replacing our kitchen bench area (due to termite damage -- thankfully, we caught it early!), and painting is the next step. We're starting with bare plywood. Following this thread with much interest. The 11' bench sits in front of a morning-sun bank of windows, and we'll paint it white. Although we're empty nesters now (so, the bench seating won't be used very often), we'd still like the finish to be durable. Brushworks: Which version of STIX do you recommend, please? I found two online: Any tips would be appreciated. I've painted and re-painted just about every interior wall, door/trim and bathroom cabinet in this 26 y/o house, but I've never started with bare wood. TIA!

First think about your budget.How much do you want to spend?? Options: 1. Purchase new cabinetry pieces from Merrilat and then have everything painted. Our Answer = We choose this option 1st, due to the fact that the final product will be even in the end in terms of color. 2. Reface cabinetry and let them create the needed pieces. Anwer = Not an option for us. Refacing involves gluing strips of the desired finish on to the cabinet frames which over time we have found that eventually detach, and will have to be repaired or replaced. Because you have been with cabinets for a time...the finish you order from the vendor will not match to the existing 100%. Finishes change over time. 3. Purchase new cabinetry. Our Answer = Our Second option. It can be very costly to replace cabinetry all together. Depending on the material and brand. Changes to be made: 1. My microwave above my gas cooktop is not vented. I cook a lot and am tired of lingering smells. It recently died and the size is no longer made. Replace with a blower installed inside a cabinetry hood. Answer = If painting cabinetry you can purchase an unfinished hood and purchase a separate blower to work with your stove's BTUs. The door style does not necessarily have to match if you are not a stickler for matchy matchy.... You can even have the hood be a different material like metal etc. 2. Add glass doors to my Butler's pantry Answer = Easy fix...just take your doors to the local glass guy and they should be able to sell you the product and install. 3. Remove the desk area and replace to create a one level area of cabinetry. Answer = You can order this direct from Merilat. A standard height 34 1/5" tall cabinets for that space. 4. Add a cabinet piece by the desk to house a microwave drawer. Answer = We usually use 30" wide Microwave cabinets. 5. backsplash Answer = Once you have your finish for the kitchen and the counter, you can post options. 6. countertops Answer = Please post pictures of options.

Aha we must have posted at the same time. I’d test a few colors on the walls, but if you want a nice light gray that has no undertones I can recommend Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore. I tried about 10 grays and that one was perfect for a cool toned kitchen.

There is a big difference between hand painted, brushed cabinets and those sprayed with a catalyzed conversion varnish. I doubt anyone has ever done a true test as to which lasts the longest, as it depends on so many variables.

I have seen a lot of interior and exterior wood painted with Fine Paints of Europe and it is just a joy to behold. It is readily available in the US, but be prepared for serious "sticker shock". Also, a painter must be familiar with how to paint using this very special paint. Their web site does list painters by state with experience.

I had very good luck using an oil-base enamel when I painted my old kitchen cabinets...twice one the years. They were painted twice, not due to wear, but due to change of taste! I had no chipping/wearing problems. But today, many states do not even allow the sale of oil-based paints and such cannot be shipped to these states. It involves an illegal "run over the border" to a state that does. I do not believe that any acrylic paint will wear as well.

I've had my new cabinets now for 3 years, and I've gotten used to the "perfect" look of the catalyzed conversion varnish paint that was used by the factory (my cabinets are by Shiloh). I've had no problems with them, but know if there is a chip, it will be far more difficult to touch up than a hand-brushed finish would be.

In the end, it's all about what your budget is and the availability of experienced craftsmen.

Thank you, everyone. I knew I could get some good background on my paint pick here. I have spent a lot of time reading various threads on Houzz and elsewhere about FPE and cabinet paint options thanks to your responses.

I will go back to our cabinet guy to check on his ideas. I do not expect that he will take kindly to my ordering from Walz although that is an interesting suggestion for another project. There are no FPE retailers around me so much to my chagrin I will have to be creative and conjure up a paint.

When I say ‘luxurious’ I mean a paint color that will have some complexity, depth, and richness. The paint on my door sample seems dull and lifeless. I have used Farrow & Ball in another house years ago and since then BM mostly although I am not up on what is used to approximate a high end cabinet finish (not hand brushed). Maybe the BM Corotech enamel? Or maybe just up the sheen on the SW my guy used to 20%. I am not overly concerned about budget—I just want this kitchen to be stylish and elegant.
