Talking about Wendy's Berry Burst Chicken Salad

I so enjoyed the half salad, today. And I'll have it again. They topped it with warm chicken cubes which really added to the salad. Plus lots of almond slices. Just delightful!

Thanks for recommending.

Looks beautiful! Would rather have had lasagna. :-)))

    That looks good!

Oh wow...that looks so good. May have to get a visit to Wendy's in. :) Thanks

    for the picture.

Glenda's photo is from the Wendy's website. It does look good, so I decided to check the nutritional information... Only 470 calories, which is great. BUT, there are 1,110mg of sodium - more than 1/2 of what a person should have total in a day! So, sadly, none of this salad for me...

Yes, I did share picture from website.

    Thanks Lindsey for the info..

I will enjoy the salad again. The half salad.

I did copy this as well from the website, HALF salad is ample.

I wouldn't eat it either, lindsey.

That's an extreme amount of sodium, even for a half salad. It's easy enough to make a salad that's a no sodium or low sodium dish, especially with a quick and easy homemade dressing like vinegar and olive oil. Someone whose daily food includes other prepared food items could easily exceed the daily maximum recommended intake.

Salad shouldn't provide a sodium bomb but that's the problem with any food from a fast food place, they all do. They're best avoided for those wanting or needing to follow a healthy diet.

Of course, one can always find something wrong with anything.

Some people, such as me, enjoy sharing, while others have their pleasure in always finding fault.

As one person says "to each his own".

I look forward to enjoying the half salad again. That was my lunch.

Man at table across from me was eating a hamburger, cup of chili, and a full garden salad.

I would look at where the sodium is coming from which is probably the feta which could easily be left off. If you ever eat a whole tomato you are having more sodium than this with the feta.

glenda, if your response to an observation about a fast food with a dangerous level of sodium is "well, I could be making an even worse choice than I did, like the man at the adjacent table did", then be happy. You're saying that watching what you eat isn't a priority for you. Many people have a different attitude than you have about being careful with what they eat.

maifleur, the info I found suggested that fresh tomatoes have very little sodium. Are you sure about what you said? I'd like to know what the story is.

"I would look at where the sodium is coming from which is probably the feta which could easily be left off."

A whole cup of crumbled feta cheese has 1,674mg of sodium. Do you think there's half a cup of crumbled feta cheese on that salad?

"If you ever eat a whole tomato you are having more sodium than this with the feta."

One cup of fresh tomato contains about 10mg of sodium.

The chicken patty probably has quite a bit of sodium. That's a pretty salad! I'd order one without the chicken, dressing, and cheese in order to bring it home where I can add my own chicken, homemade dressing, and some goat cheese.

rhizo, then make your own and eat at home, eh? Why go to Wendy's. No patty, just chicken cubes. More healthy for you, yes!

Again, multi thanks to Kathleen for recommending. That is what this thread was all about.

    That looks delicious!

I'm not a fan of feta so I'd probably ask for it to be left off unless the salads are made ahead of time, in which case, I'd pick off as much as I could. Same thing I do with olives on pizza, cuz I don't like olives. I know...I know!

Everyone is different, but I eat out at fast food places so rarely, that the occasional salt bomb isn't going to hurt me. The healthy eating I do at home offsets it.

Glenda, you have a milestone birthday coming up this weekend and you've earned yourself a few salt bombs or whatever else you wish to treat yourself with. Now, if it were me, I'd be sitting in a brewery treating myself with some high calorie craft beers, but that's just me!

I'm glad you enjoyed that beautiful salad. :-)

FYI, I have never eaten at Wendy's, and this was my first. Will definitely go back for another berry salad. So be it, for all you critics.

Glenda, their Harvest apple salad is good too. I think that's what it's called anyway...probably loaded with sodium too. Trying to think what it all has on it and can't at the moment...apples, but the best part are the candied pecans.

"Each person is free to do what works for them without criticism."

I didn't criticize anyone or anything. I simply stated facts. I thought the salad looked good and we eat a lot of salads, so I went to the Wendy's site to check it out. Since March of last year when I ended up in the ER and got a cardiac stent, I have been very aware of how much sodium and cholesterol I am consuming each day (even though my cholesterol levels were very good when I got the stent - total cholesterol 155, LDL 101). I was shocked at how much sodium is in that Wendy's salad, and thought others who might be concerned with nutritional info might be, as well.

Here are three salads from Panera Bread that all have well below the sodium levels of the Wendy's salads. (There are 6 Panera Bread locations in the Lexington, KY, area and 7 in the Birmingham, AL, area.)

Exactly, lindsey. Too many people can't be bothered to read nutrition information or ingredients lists of what they want to eat. They ignore the unambiguous and uncontroversial advice of health experts. It does matter. Taking the ostrich approach or resorting to rationalizations won't make the truth go away.

I miss Wendy's Chicken BLT salad. It was a big salad with all the salad goodies. You could get either regular or spicy fried chicken on top with honey mustard dressing. I loved it. They discontinued it, I believe in 2010. Of course, I don't care for the new ones. I don't like fruit in a salad and I detest kale.

It is easy to copycat, but was so easy to grab when I needed a quick lunch, without any mess or leftovers).

I have no idea why some think they need to be a food guide. I thought we all make our own choices, not other peoples' choices?

Sigh, some people have to ruin everything, as well as be so sanctimonious.

Rob333, since when does showing options equate to making other peoples' choices?

Tigereye, I guess it's ok to be judgmental, eh?

    Just showing my opinion Lindsey.

Childish is making a negative remark about something someone said they liked. Judgmental is making a negative remark about something someone likes.

You do not have to like or eat the salads, but could you not of just scrolled on by without your negative remarks.

If you only eat one or two of Wendy's salads a year, I don't think you have consumed that much sodium.

Even if you do eat too much of whatever is the "oh-no-don't-eat-it" for the current year, no one needs a nanny.

I grew up with eggs, butter, and lard are bad. Margarine, Crisco, and vegetable oil are good! Guess what, now eggs, butter, and lard are much better for you in moderation that the fake stuff I grew up with.

Salt is bad, oh we messed up salt can be good. This is bad, that is good. Oh no, wait a year or so and that is good and this is bad.

Eat what YOU want, but don't lecture anyone else.

I eat at Panera Bread too, mostly their salads but they aren't as good tasting, probably because of the lack of salty crumbled cheeses. Their soups, however, are super salty. I don't have to look up the sodium levels because I can barely eat them due to the salt content. I do like the first salad you posted Lindsey, the other two, not so much. They are also more expensive than Wendy's and less convenient for me when I'm at work. No Panera just up the road. There is a very overpriced Organic-"Super Food" salad place nearby but again they are very expensive and the salads are way more than I can eat at one sitting. Unlike the half Wendy's salad. I don't have hypertension or CHF so although I don't add a lot of salt to my food when I'm cooking, I'm not extremely worried about my salt intake at the moment. I'm sorry your post went in such a negative way, Glenda. Seems to happen every time I post something these days.

I would not like any of the salads Lindsey posted, ( no matter what the sodium content, they could be super loaded with salt), because they have fruit in the salad. To me a main dish, or a side dish, does not have fruit. A dessert has fruit. My negative content for the day!

"To me a main dish, or a side dish, does not have fruit. A dessert has fruit. My negative content for the day!"

That's not negative at all, it's your taste preference. Having such rules suggests you're rather inflexible but those are your taste preferences all the same.

Lindsey, not to derail the thread but if you are comfortable sharing, what was your HDL? I've always been told it is protective if it is high.

I'm glad someone posted the sodium amount in the Wendy's Berry Burst salad. I had no idea it contained so much. I like that salad, but I try to watch my intake, so I'll probably not be having another one. It's a salad right, who would have thought there would be so much sodium in it.

Glenda, I really appreciate your posting about the salad. I am very happy to see good salads available in nearly all fast food restaurants these days. But surely you cannot take offence at those of us who have strict dietary requirements making the simple changes that we need in order to be healthy.

It's nothing personal against you at all, but a conversation amongst people with different tastes and (in my case) health issues. Surely, you are tolerant of a give and take between people. It's how we learn from each other.

I have always enjoyed Wendy's salads. Never tried that one, but now I will. It looks wonderful. They have the best little Caesar side salad also. Lot of times I will buy 2 and take one home for later or the next day. Thanks Glenda

FYI regarding tomatoes: when raw, tomatoes are a very low sodium food and packed with all manner of good-for-you nutrients. They gain sodium and lose health benefits as they go through processing. Lots of added salt in our canned tomato products, so much so that some make my lips burn.

rhizo, no one faults you for having your own dietary requirements. Information is even a good thing to have. I don't think anyone would take offense at either of those ideas. Food choices are a very personal thing.

Me? I have to have decaf. I LOVE caffeine, but it doesn't love me. I know it tastes different and they effect removing it with chemicals, so be it. I already had to give up caffeine, but I really didn't want to give up the ritual and comfort found in a cup of coffee.

    :)
