Comments (3)Pizza last week, but more often I nuke a bowl of Chili, Thai-spiced garden stir-fry, or leftover soup-of-the-week, with pepper, winter greens, & minced Chinese Leek stirred in to freshen up flavors. If I'm shaky-tired hungry, Tuna on poppyseed bread, with dijon and cheeze is a great comfort - even better with big leaves of mustard green or other peppery greens inside. If in season, open-faced, with fresh broiled tomato oozing on top. Mmmmm! (I've got about 8 kinds of tomatoes sprouting now! YAY!) I love a good IPA or malty Craft Beer after gardening too. With friends is even more of a reward, but who really wants to leave the garden, clean up and travel to meet em?...See MoreWhat's your favorite springtime breakfast?
Comments (26)Beth, I'm in Michigan so it will probably be different where you are, but commonly chickens need at least 10 hours of light to lay, so when the days get short and it's still dark when I go to work at 8 am and dark when I go home at 5 pm, the hens stop laying. I could put a light in their coop and get a heated waterer and keep them laying pretty much year round (except for when they molt), but the electricity would cost me more than the eggs are worth, so I just freeze eggs when I'm getting a lot. Hens also stop laying when they are molting. Hens molt annually, they start losing their feathers and grow new feathers. They look absolutely awful, BTW, when they are molting, half naked chickens. (grin) This is a good explanation from thepoultrysite.com. "After a hen has been producing eggs for several months, she becomes increasingly likely to molt. Molting and egg production are not mutually compatible, so when molting occurs, egg production ceases. The rest from egg laying allows the hen to restore its plumage condition by shedding old feathers and growing new ones. At the same time, the henÂs reproductive tract is rejuvenated, allowing it to increase its rate of egg production and produce higher quality eggs when it returns to lay. Under natural day lengths, molting tends to coincide with the change in season so that hens molt in the fall after they cease egg production due to declining day lengths. In these circumstances, it is normal for all the hens in a flock to go out of production and molt more or less in synchrony. However, if artificial lighting is provided, a hen may molt at any time of year and not in synchrony with other hens. If this happens, she should return to lay in several weeks." Old hens stop laying eggs eventually and there are some chicken diseases that will prevent laying. Also, if a hen is "broody" she will stop laying, because she wants to hatch the eggs she's sitting on. Mine lay at optimum production about 6 or 8 months out of the year, they never stop completely, but I'll go from getting 10 or 12 eggs a day to getting one or two per day, sometimes none. Comments (26)I didn't see this one posted - and it is absolutely the best breakfast potato casserole ever. Save those eggs for another dish LOL! Actually, I usually serve this with Benedict or quiche which makes it easy. HASH BROWN BRUNCH CASSEROLE 1 2-pound package frozen hash brown potatoes, unthawed 1 10 3/4-ounce can cream of celery soup, undiluted 3 cups (packed) grated sharp cheddar cheese (about 12 ounces) 1 cup sour cream 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 6-ounce can french fried onions Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine first 5 ingredients in large bowl. Transfer to 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Bake until top is slightly golden, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Sprinkle with onions. Bake until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Serves 12. Bon Appétit November 1995 Idelle Levey...See MoreHelp me decide which chandelier for breakfast nook... Quick
Comments (14)Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your feedback. I have decided on Soho - that's what my gut said, and most of you guys, too. I am posting my first mood board so you guys can let me know what you think. I have already ordered cabinets and lights. The granite will be chosen later, but I want it to be light with lots of movement with greys/taupe and some black. I love the delicatus that I have seen in showrooms, but I have had no luck finding it at the suppliers in this area. I have no idea what finish I should use on my cabinet hardware. I think I am going to use a handle or bar on both the top cabs and drawers. What do you guys think? I am using antique pewter hardware on the interior doors of the house, but there are not many doors in view of the kitchen area, so it doesn't have to match. The background color of the board is BM Revere Pewter... That is our paint color of tthe space. I would love any feedback you guys have!...See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years ago
