Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Pendants over 5 ft island

We are remodeling our kitchen and our new cabinets and island will be in this week. Our ceilings are just under 8 ft. I would like pendant lighting over our 5ft island and don’t know if I have room for 3 or if I have to go with 2. I would also like a chandelier over the our 6-8 ft table. Any suggestions would be appreciate.

We would need asome more info like your style a picture of the space your table unless you just want 1000s of random guesses. As for size of pendants that depends on the pendant and what is now in for electrical in the space . That should already be done BTW.

Hi Lynn! We usually recommend spacing pendants about 2 feet apart over an island, so you would have room for two pendants over your 5 foot long island. If you would like some recommendations, tell me a bit about your style: are there any finishes you prefer? Any design styles or looks you love?

Can you tell me a little more about your table, too? Is it adjustable so it could be either 6 or 8 feet long? I want to understand it a little better before offering recommendations for that area.

My island is a triangle/pie shape and 74 x 69. I have 3 lights - set in a triangle. They are spaced 43" apart and only about 13 inches from the edge of my counter. Not only are my pendants within arm waving distance (they've been knocked a few times), I think they look funny - too far apart. Wish they were closer together and further in from the edge. But then my contractor forced me to make a decision when the room was empty as well. One of these days when DH is in a really good mood, I may ask him about moving them closer together. I think I would do 3 if I had a rectangle island and could put them in a row - BUT that assumes the lights were on the small size like mine - 4w x 7h. If you pick larger lights, then 3 may be too many. Do you have your lights picked out? If you look at the fixtures that have multiple pendants, they are usually spaced fairly close together.

We are using 3 of the 10" Pottery Barn City Glass pendants over our 9' island. I was also worried about having enough task lighting, so we added a can light over the island sink. Just wanted to add that many use lanterns over the island for an airy look and plenty of light.

Thanks for the quick replies! Here are the pictures of the lights. Im not sure I have a look I’m going for, but I have looked at thousands of lights and these are the ones I liked. I want it to feel homey, but also pretty and I think the kitchen needs a pop that the lights can provide. I thought either of these would be good but when I realized how wide the Minka light is and how long the hvl esopus is, I realized I could use some help.

I have an island that is 113" x 40". I'm not sure if I should go with two or three pendants. I think I want larger pendants (20-24" in diameter). How many and how would you space them? Thanks!

I would also suggest being mindful of any tall people in your home, with 8 foot ceilings pendants over an island will be right in a tall person’s sight line. So frosted glass may help. We have 8 foot ceilings and we are foregoing pendants over the island because my husband is 6’2” and they would be right at his eye level.
